Perfect square of numbers

Learning Outcomes

1.    Students will be able to evaluate the squares, cubes and other powers of positive and negative numbers with or without use of calculator.

2.    Students will be able to describe the power notation for expressing numbers

5.     The students will be able to calculate square of numbers and will be able to derive a relationship between area of square and square of the number

Description Of Activity

1.     Teacher asks students to form 3 to 4 groups of students.

2.     Groups contains number of students 4, 9, 16, 25, 36…. etc.

3.     They will be instructed to stand in equal numbers of rows and columns with equal distances.

4.     They can measure the length of row and column by using scale, rope or any other method .

5.     All the groups will then declare the results they have got.

6.     Students collect the data of cricket match then collect the perfect squares from this data.

7.    Each students get a clear idea of perfect square.

Variations

1.      Students can be encouraged by measuring the dimensions, area of squares in example before multiplying and compare with squares of numbers.

2.     Students asked to calculate the area of different square shaped bodies and then compare with square of numbers.

Coaching Tips

 You can encourage the students to calculate the area of a square and verify it relate with square of numbers in the activity (see ppt).

Equipment/Material Required

Measuring tape, scale, colored  paper sheets, scissors,

                             Notepad, pencil.
