Symmetry In A Volleyball Court- Marking A Volleyball Court
Learning Outcomes
Students learn how to sketch a figure which has symmetry about a line.
They can complete a figure which has got symmetry about a given line.
They apply their knowledge to make play grounds (courts) for various games which has liner symmetry.
Description Of Activity
How to Play
Students will try to do it in contrary to the video taking the advantage of symmetry, through a simple activity.
The students must be shown the video to draw the volley ball court. They may be asked to suggest the alternative method making use of the symmetry and a competitive team work.
How is it let us see:
The students are taken to the ground where the volley ball court is to be marked and made them to group into 2 groups as per their choice. The needed instructions are given with the needed measurements.
The teacher and PET marks a line (the center line) and the positions of the post required for the court. Now the students have to draw the two courts which are symmetric about the line drawn. The time taken by the teams are noted to find the winner.(The teacher gives a hint that each court is a square of side 9 m and diagonal 12.73 m)
The procedure is suppose to be- 9 m segment is cut between the two post Team marks two points on the center line segment at a distance 3 m and 6 m from one of the end point of the 9 m segment. Let these point be P and Q respectively. Now arcs are drawn from these points with radius 5 m and 10 m respectively. Again arcs are drawn from the end point with radius 4 m and 8 m respectively to intersect the arcs at x and y.
Now draw the side line and mark a point at 9 m on it. Now complete the square of side 9 m and diagonal 12.73 m, which makes half of the court. Simultaneously the other team makes the court on the other side of the center line which is symmetric about the center line.
Simultaneously the other team makes the court on the other side of the center line which is symmetric about the center line.
Variations
This can be converted into a competetion with more number of student groups.
Coaching Tips
With the helpof the image attached the measure of the court and names of the areas are to be taught to the students
Equipment/Material Required
