Activity
Participate in a fun and engaging physical activity.
Develop basic locomotor skills like running, hopping, and galloping.
Improve coordination and balance.
Learn different animal movements and their sounds.
This lesson plan turns playtime into a learning experience! Students will move around the gym or playground like various animals, incorporating basic locomotor skills and animal sounds.
Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music (optional).
Marching: March around the space for a minute, encouraging tall posture and high knees.
Arm Circles: Make large circles forward and backward with arms for 30 seconds each.
Jumping Jacks: Do jumping jacks for 30 seconds to get the heart rate up.
Activity (20 minutes):
1. Introduction (5 minutes):
Show pictures or flashcards of different animals (elephant, rabbit, bear, horse).
Briefly discuss how each animal moves. (Elephant: stomps, Rabbit: hops, Bear: lumbers, Horse: gallops).
Explain that today, they will be moving around the space like these animals!
2. Animal Movement Practice (15 minutes):
Elephant Walk: Call out "Elephants!" Students walk slowly and heavily, stomping their feet with each step.
Rabbit Hop: Call out "Rabbits!" Students hop on two feet, keeping their bodies low and arms bent.
Bear Walk: Call out "Bears!" Students walk on all fours, keeping their backs flat and core engaged.
Horse Gallop: Call out "Horses!" Students run with a high knee action, kicking their heels out behind them.
Repeat each animal movement for 1-2 minutes, allowing students to explore and have fun.
3. Animal Laps (5 minutes):
Explain that they will run laps around the designated space, changing animal movements each lap.
Call out different animal movements one at a time. Students run a lap mimicking the called animal.
Start with slow movements like elephant walk or bear walk, and gradually incorporate faster movements like rabbit hop or horse gallop.
Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Walk around the space for a minute to cool down.
Animal Poses: Call out different animals, and students hold a pose that imitates that animal for a few seconds each (e.g., elephant trunk raised, rabbit ears up, bear standing tall).
Remember:
Animal Laps is a fun and engaging way for young children to get active, develop locomotor skills, and learn about different animals.
Obstacle Course: Set up cones or other obstacles on the course. Students navigate the course while mimicking animal movements.
Animal Freeze Dance: Play upbeat music. Students move like animals, and when the music stops, they freeze in an animal pose.
Focus on Fun: Keep the activity lighthearted and encourage participation.
Provide Clear Instructions: Briefly demonstrate each animal movement before students attempt it.
Modify for Different Abilities: Allow students to modify movements based on their abilities (e.g., walking instead of hopping for rabbits).
Positive Reinforcement: Praise students for their effort and creativity.
Change the Pace: Alternate slow and fast animal movements to keep students engaged.
Open space (gym or playground)
