Galloping Gazelles!

Learning Outcomes

Develop basic galloping coordination skills.
Enhance spatial awareness and body control.
Practice teamwork and sportsmanship in a relay race format.

Description Of Activity

This fun and engaging lesson plan uses hurdles to introduce students to the galloping movement, a fundamental locomotor skill. Through a series of drills and a relay race, students will practice galloping techniques, develop coordination, and experience the joy of teamwork.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Light jog or jumping jacks: Get the heart rate up and prepare muscles for movement.
Animal walks: Encourage students to mimic animal walks like walking like a bear (on all fours) or hopping like a rabbit.
Dynamic stretches: Focus on legs, core, and arms (e.g., lunges, arm circles, torso twists).

Skill Development (15 minutes):

1. Introduction (5 minutes):
Briefly discuss different animal movements, including galloping.
Show pictures or videos (optional) of animals that gallop, like horses or zebras.
Explain that galloping is a way of running with a skip-like hop on each leg.

2. Galloping Practice (10 minutes):
Stationary Practice: Students stand on one leg, then quickly bring the other leg up to their chest in a hopping motion, switching legs and repeating (mimicking the galloping motion without moving).
Walking Gallop: Students walk with an exaggerated gallop motion, emphasizing the high knee lifts and leg extension with each step.
Low Hurdle Gallop: Set up low hurdles (or cones) spaced a comfortable distance apart. Students practice galloping over the hurdles, focusing on maintaining a steady rhythm and lifting their knees high enough to clear the hurdle.

Activity (15 minutes):

Galloping Gazelle Relay Race:
Divide students into teams of equal size.
Set up a relay race course with low hurdles (or cones) spaced evenly apart.
Each team lines up behind a starting line.
On signal, the first player from each team gallops over the hurdles, focusing on proper form and clearing each hurdle.
Once they reach the end of the course, they tag the next player in line who starts their gallop.
The first team to have all members complete the galloping course wins!

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Light walking or gentle stretches to cool down and prevent injury.

Remember:
Galloping is a fun and foundational movement skill. This lesson plan provides a playful and engaging way for young children to develop their coordination, body control, and teamwork spirit. By focusing on proper form, positive reinforcement, and a fun atmosphere, your students will be galloping gazelles in no time!

Variations

Partner Gallop: Students can practice galloping in pairs, holding hands for balance while they coordinate their movements.
Galloping Obstacle Course: Design a simple obstacle course with additional elements like crawling under tunnels or balancing on beams, requiring students to transition between galloping and other movements.

Coaching Tips

Focus on Form: Encourage students to keep their back straight, core engaged, and arms swinging naturally at their sides.
Start Slow: Begin with slow and controlled practice to ensure proper technique before gradually increasing speed.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate successful attempts and offer constructive feedback for improvement.
Make it Fun! Use playful language and encourage creativity in their galloping actions.

Equipment/Material Required

  • Pool noodles (made into ‘stick horses’ - pictured below)
  • Need enough to allow about five students at a time to race
