Description Of Activity

Boogie on down with Disco Hoops! This exciting PE lesson plan combines the classic fun of hula hoops with the challenge of hurdles, all set to groovy tunes. Students will practice locomotor skills and coordination while busting a move and keeping their hula hoops spinning.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Get ready to groove! Play upbeat disco music and have students participate in a fun warm-up.
A light jog or jumping jacks to get the heart rate up.
Arm circles (forward and backward) and air high fives.
Practice some basic dance moves like grapevines, side shuffles, and jumping jacks (with arms raised).

Activity (20 minutes):

1. Disco Hoop Basics (5 minutes):
Briefly demonstrate how to hold the hula hoop (around the waist) and spin it with a hip movement.
Play some disco music and encourage students to practice spinning their hoops while walking in place and moving their hips to the beat.

2. Disco Hurdle Course (15 minutes):
Set up the hurdles in a straight line or a zig-zag pattern, spaced appropriately for the students' age and ability.
Explain the different ways students can navigate the course with their hula hoops while grooving to the music:
Skipping: Encourage students to skip over the hurdles while keeping their hoops spinning and moving their bodies to the music.
Jumping (Optional): For more advanced students, introduce jumping over the hurdles with the hula hoop spinning.
Disco Moves: Throughout the course, students can incorporate simple dance moves like grapevines, side shuffles, or jumping jacks (with arms raised) while maintaining control of their hoops.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for arms, legs, and core.
Light walking or slow dancing to cool down gradually.

Remember:
Disco Hoops provides a dynamic and engaging way for students to develop locomotor skills, coordination, and a sense of rhythm. By incorporating upbeat music, dance elements, and a touch of challenge, you can create a fun and memorable PE experience that gets everyone moving and grooving!

Variations

Freeze Dance: Play music with students navigating the course with their hoops. When the music stops, everyone freezes and tries to hold their hoop still in a disco pose.
Teamwork Challenge: Divide the class into teams. Teams take turns completing the course with their hoops, with the fastest team winning.

Coaching Tips

Focus on Fun! Keep the atmosphere energetic and celebrate students' creativity and dance moves.
Safety First: Ensure proper spacing between hurdles and students, and adjust hurdle height as needed for younger students.
Hip Movement: Remind students to use a small hip rotation to keep the hoop spinning.
Eyes Up: Encourage students to look ahead and not down at their feet while navigating the course.
Let Loose and Have Fun! This is a chance for students to express themselves through movement and music.

Equipment/Material Required

Hula Hoop (one per student)
Hurdles (enough for a spaced-out obstacle course - adjustable height for younger students)
Fun disco music!
