Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Fun, upbeat music!
Light jog or jumping jacks to get the heart rate up.
Arm circles (forward and backward) and torso twists.
High knees and butt kicks while marching in place.
Activity (20 minutes):
1. Hula Hoop Basics (5 minutes):
Briefly demonstrate how to hold the hula hoop (around the waist) and spin it with a hip movement.
Allow students to practice spinning their hoops while walking in place.
2. Setting Up the Course (5 minutes):
Divide the class into teams with an equal number of students.
Set up a relay race course for each team using cones. The course can be a straight line or a zig-zag pattern, with cones placed about 5-10 feet apart depending on age and ability.
3. The Great Hula Hoop Showdown (10 minutes):
Explain the race rules:
Teams line up behind the starting line, each student holding a hula hoop.
On "Go!", the first student in each team starts running, skipping, or hopping over the cones while keeping their hula hoop spinning.
If a hoop falls, the student must stop, pick it up, and start spinning it again before continuing.
Once the first student completes the course, they tag the next teammate by handing them the hoop. The race continues until all team members have completed the course.
The first team to finish with all hoops spinning wins The Great Hula Hoop Showdown!
Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for arms, legs, and core.
Light walking or jumping jacks to cool down gradually.
Remember:
The Great Hula Hoop Showdown provides a fun and engaging way for students to develop teamwork, communication, and coordination while using hula hoops. By incorporating a competitive element and a touch of creativity, you can create a memorable PE experience that gets everyone moving and having a blast!
Locomotor Skill Challenge: Assign a specific locomotor skill (e.g., skipping, hopping) for each leg of the relay race.
Partner Up: Students can work in pairs, holding opposite sides of the same hula hoop to navigate the course together.
Advanced Course: For more advanced students, add obstacles like crawling under cones or jumping over hurdles to the course.
Focus on Teamwork: Encourage students to cheer for their teammates and communicate effectively during the race.
Safety First: Remind students to run carefully and avoid collisions with other teams.
Hip Movement: Emphasize keeping the hoop spinning with a small hip rotation.
Eyes Up: Encourage students to look ahead while navigating the course, not down at their feet.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate successful runs and encourage students who may struggle.
Hula Hoop (one per student)
Cones (4 per team)
Optional: Prizes for the winning team (small stickers, candy, etc.)
