Hula Hoop Tag is a fun twist on the classic tag game, incorporating the colorful joy of hula hoops! Students will chase and evade each other while keeping their hula hoops spinning, adding a playful challenge and a touch of strategy.
Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Fun, upbeat music!
Light jog or jumping jacks to get the heart rate up.
Arm circles (forward and backward) and torso twists.
Practice spinning the hula hoops while walking in place.
Activity (20 minutes):
1. Hula Hoop Basics (5 minutes):
Briefly demonstrate how to hold the hula hoop (around the waist) and spin it with a hip movement.
Allow students to practice spinning their hoops while walking in place.
2. Hula Hoop Tag Rules (5 minutes):
Explain the game rules:
Choose one or two students to be "It" (the taggers). They don't need a hula hoop.
All other players start with a hula hoop spinning around their waist.
Students run around the play area, dodging the taggers and keeping their hula hoops spinning.
If a student gets tagged (touched by a tagger), their hula hoop stops spinning.
The student with a stopped hoop sits out for a short time (10 seconds) before rejoining the game with a spinning hoop.
The game continues until a set time limit is reached or a designated number of students are tagged out.
Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for arms, legs, and core.
Light walking or jumping jacks to cool down gradually.
Remember:
Hula Hoop Tag provides a fun and engaging way for young students to develop locomotor skills, agility, and teamwork. By incorporating the playful challenge of keeping the hoops spinning, you can create a memorable PE experience that gets everyone moving, laughing, and enjoying the game!
Color Chaos: Assign different colors to the hula hoops. Taggers can only tag players with a specific color hoop, adding an extra layer of strategy.
Hula Hoop Freeze: Play music while students run with their hoops. When the music stops, everyone freezes and tries to hold their hoop still. Taggers can then tag players who move their hoop.
Team Hula Hoop Tag: Divide the class into teams. Students work together to keep their team's hoops spinning while avoiding the taggers.
Focus on Fun! Keep the atmosphere light and playful, encouraging laughter and creativity.
Safety First: Remind students to run carefully and avoid collisions with other players.
Hip Movement: Remind students to use a small hip rotation to keep the hoop spinning.
Strategy & Teamwork: Students can strategize by running in groups and making it harder for the taggers to catch them.
Change of Pace: Encourage students to vary their running speed and direction to avoid getting tagged.
