Description Of Activity

Hopping Mania is a PE lesson plan bursting with bouncy fun! Students will explore different hopping variations, developing their balance and coordination while participating in playful challenges. It's a great way to get them moving and exploring movement possibilities.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Fun, upbeat music!
Light jog or jumping jacks to get the heart rate up.
Arm circles (forward and backward) and torso twists.
Practice jumping on two feet and then hopping on one foot for a few seconds each leg.

Activity (20 minutes):

1. Hopping Basics (5 minutes):
Demonstrate different hopping techniques:
Two-Legged Hop: Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and jump off the ground, landing softly with both feet together. Repeat.
One-Legged Hop: Hop on one foot for a few seconds, then switch legs and repeat.
Frog Hop: Crouch low with hands on the ground and jump forward, landing with both feet together in a squat position. Repeat.

2. Hopping Obstacle Course (10 minutes):
Set up a hopping course using cones: straight lines, zig-zags, circles, etc.
Students hop through the course using the different techniques practiced before (two-legged hop, one-legged hop, frog hop).
You can adjust the difficulty of the course based on the students' abilities.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for legs, arms, and core.
Light walking or jumping jacks to cool down gradually.

Remember:
Hopping Mania provides a fun and engaging way for young students to develop locomotor skills, balance, and coordination. By incorporating different hopping variations, challenges, and playful activities, you can create a memorable PE experience that gets everyone moving, hopping, and having a blast!

Variations

Hopping Relay Race: Divide the class into teams and set up a relay course. Students hop their way across the course and tag the next teammate. The first team to finish wins.
Hopping & Catching: Introduce beanbags or small balls. Students practice hopping while holding the object. You can add a catching element where they toss the ball to a partner while hopping.
Hopping Freeze Dance: Play music while students hop around. When the music stops, everyone freezes in a hopping pose and tries to hold it.

Coaching Tips

Focus on Fun! Keep the atmosphere light and playful, encouraging laughter and creativity.
Safety First: Remind students to land softly on their toes and keep their knees slightly bent for better balance.
Start Slow: Begin with two-legged hops and gradually introduce one-legged hops once comfortable.
Visual Cues: Demonstrate the different hops with exaggerated movements to help students understand the technique.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate successful hops and offer encouraging words for those who struggle.

Equipment/Material Required

Cones (enough to create a hopping course)
