The Hopscotch Challenge!

Learning Outcomes

Develop locomotor skills like hopping and jumping.
Improve coordination and balance while hopping on one foot.
Practice counting and number recognition.
Participate in a fun and traditional group activity.

Description Of Activity

Hopping into Fun transforms hopscotch, a classic playground game, into a PE lesson plan! Students will practice hopping on one foot while navigating a hopscotch grid, improving their coordination and balance in a playful way.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Fun, upbeat music!
Light jog or jumping jacks to get the heart rate up.
Arm circles (forward and backward) and torso twists.
Practice hopping on one foot for a few seconds, alternating feet.

Activity (20 minutes):

1. Drawing the Hopscotch Grid (5 minutes):
Choose an open space on the playground or gym floor.
Using chalk, draw a traditional hopscotch grid with numbered squares. You can adjust the size and number of squares depending on the age and ability of your students.

2. Hopping Basics (5 minutes):
Briefly demonstrate how to hop on one foot, keeping the other leg bent at the knee.
Students practice hopping in place for a few seconds, alternating feet.

3. The Hopscotch Challenge (10 minutes):
Explain the game rules:
Students take turns throwing their beanbags onto square #1. They can use an underhand throw.
If the beanbag lands inside square #1 and doesn't touch any lines, it hops on one foot, skipping square #1, to reach square #10 (the turn-around point).
They hop back the same way, picking up their beanbag on the way back from square #10.
If they land outside the square, step on a line, or lose their balance, their turn ends.
The first student to complete the course without mistakes wins the round!
Students can take turns throwing and hopping.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for legs and core.
Light walking or jumping jacks to cool down gradually.

Remember:
Hopping into Fun provides a fun and engaging way for young students to develop locomotor skills, coordination, and counting skills. By incorporating variations and a touch of creativity, you can create a memorable PE experience that gets everyone hopping and having a blast!

Variations

Colorful Hopscotch: Use different colored chalk to draw the grid and assign specific colors for hopping (e.g., only hop on red squares).
Partner Up: Students can work in pairs, taking turns throwing and hopping together, fostering teamwork.
Themed Hopscotch: Create a hopscotch grid with animal pictures on each square. Students hop and imitate the animal they land on.

Coaching Tips

Focus on Fun! Keep the atmosphere light and encourage cheers for each other.
Safety First: Remind students to hop carefully and avoid collisions with other players.
Start with Two Feet: If hopping on one foot is too challenging, allow students to use two feet initially while they get comfortable with the game.
Eyes Up: Encourage students to look ahead and not down at their feet while hopping.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate successful hops and encourage students who struggle.
