Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Fun, upbeat music!
Light jog or jumping jacks to get the heart rate up.
Arm circles (forward and backward) and high knees.
Practice running in place, focusing on high knees and pumping arms.
Activity (20 minutes):
1. Setting Up the Relay Race (5 minutes):
Divide the class into teams with an equal number of students.
Mark the starting and finishing lines for the relay race with cones or markers.
Place a pool noodle on the starting line for each team.
2. Noodle Noggins Relay Rules (5 minutes):
Explain the rules:
At the start signal, the first student on each team will hold the pool noodle upright on the ground, using their forehead to push it forward while running.
They can't use their hands or any other body part to touch the noodle except their forehead.
Once they reach the finish line, they tap the next teammate in line to tag them.
The next teammate repeats the race, using their forehead to push the noodle.
The first team to have all members complete the race with the noodle wins!
3. Noodle Noggins Race Time! (10 minutes):
Start the relay race and let the fun begin! Encourage teams to cheer each other on and celebrate successful runs.
Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for legs and core.
Light walking or jumping jacks to cool down gradually.
Remember:
Noodle Noggins provides a fun and engaging way for young students to develop locomotor skills, teamwork, and coordination. By incorporating playful challenges and variations, you can create a memorable PE experience that gets everyone moving, laughing, and working together as a team!
Different Body Parts: Students can try using different body parts to push the noodle, like their knees or elbows (adding a new challenge).
Obstacle Course: Create a simple obstacle course with cones or markers that students must navigate with their noodle using their forehead.
Partner Up: Students can work in pairs, with one person holding the noodle upright and the other using their forehead to push it forward. This variation requires communication and coordination.
Focus on Fun! Encourage cheers and teamwork among the teams.
Safety First: Remind students to run carefully and avoid collisions with other teams.
Head Position: Encourage students to keep their head up and look forward, not down at the noodle.
Teamwork: Remind students to communicate and cheer each other on during the race.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate successful runs and encourage students who struggle to keep trying.
Pool noodles (enough for each team, plus a few extra)
Cones or markers (to mark the starting and finishing lines)
