Activity
Students will practice jumping skills with a focus on jumping high and far.
Students will develop spatial awareness and coordination.
Students will have fun and be active.
Gather students in a circle and sing a jumping song (e.g., "If You're Happy and You Know It").
Discuss what jumping is and how it makes our bodies feel.
Briefly explain the difference between jumping high and far.
Warm-Up Activities (10 minutes):
Animal Jumps: Demonstrate different animal jumps (bunny hops, frog jumps, kangaroo jumps) and have students imitate each one.
Jumping Jacks: Lead students in jumping jacks, encouraging them to jump high and clap their hands overhead.
Main Activities (20 minutes):
Reach for the Sky: Have students stand with their feet shoulder-width apart. Instruct them to bend their knees, swing their arms down, then jump up reaching as high as they can with their fingertips.
Cone Challenge: Set up cones in a straight line with increasing distances between them (start close and gradually increase the space). Have students take a running start and jump over each cone, focusing on jumping far.
Variation: Place beanbags on top of the cones. Students can jump and try to knock them off.
Cool-Down Activities (5 minutes):
Marching Parade: Play calming music and have students march around the space, gradually slowing down.
Relaxation: Lead students in some gentle stretches like arm circles and rolling their ankles.
Wrap-up (5 minutes):
Gather students back in a circle and discuss what they learned about jumping.
Ask them if they think they can jump higher or farther next time.
End with a high-five or jump for a job well done!
Differentiation:
For younger students, focus on jumping high and reaching for the sky.
For older students, increase the challenge of the cone activity by increasing the distance between cones or adding more cones.
Allow students to take turns setting up the cones for the challenge, encouraging spatial planning.
Assessment:
Observe students throughout the lesson to see if they are:
Participating actively in the activities.
Attempting to jump high and far.
Demonstrating coordination and spatial awareness.
Extension Activities:
Play a game of "Hot Potato" with a beanbag, hopping on one foot while holding the beanbag.
Create a jumping obstacle course with pillows, blankets, and hula hoops.
Read a book about jumping, like "Froggy Gets Dressed" or "The Very Clumsy Click Beetle."
Safety:
Ensure the jumping area is clear and free of obstacles.
Supervise students closely during all activities.
Instruct students to land softly on their toes and bend their knees to absorb impact.
Open space with soft flooring (gym, playground with mats, grassy area)
Cones (4-6)
beanbags (optional)
Markers (optional)
