Description Of Activity

Jumping Like Frogs! provides a playful and exciting experience for children to develop their jumping skills. It incorporates frog-themed activities that progress in difficulty, allowing children to learn and improve at their own pace.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music (optional) and encourage children to move freely with light jumping jacks, arm circles, leg swings, and animal walks (pretending to be animals that jump, like rabbits or monkeys).

Introduction (5 minutes):
Gather the children and explain they will be pretending to be playful frogs who love to jump!
Briefly demonstrate a basic jumping motion with both feet together, focusing on bending knees slightly before jumping and landing softly on both feet.
Jumping Progression (20-25 minutes):
Free Jumping:
Encourage children to jump freely around the space, mimicking playful frogs.
Play upbeat music (optional) to add to the fun.
Froggy Hops:
Mark small circles on the floor with masking tape or use cones (optional) as lily pads.
Have children practice hopping from one "lily pad" to another with both feet together, focusing on a gentle landing.
Distance Jumps:
Mark starting lines on the floor with masking tape.
Demonstrate a basic jump with both feet together, focusing on a slight forward lean before jumping.
Encourage children to jump forward as far as they can, landing softly on both feet.
Gradually increase the distance between jumps as their skills improve.
Froggy Leaps:
Mark two parallel lines on the floor with masking tape a short distance apart (adjustable based on age and skill).
Instruct children to jump sideways over the lines, landing with both feet together on the other side. Encourage them to push off with both feet and land softly.
Height Jumps:
Demonstrate a basic jump with both feet together, reaching for the ceiling with their arms (optional: hold a small beanbag in their hand to reach for).
Encourage children to jump as high as they can, focusing on a strong push off with both feet and landing softly on both feet.

Froggy Obstacle Course (Optional):
Create a simple obstacle course using cones, hula hoops, or other safe materials. Children jump over or through the obstacles, mimicking playful frogs navigating their environment.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Play calming music and encourage children to walk around or stretch gently. This allows them to cool down and wind down after the activity.

Additional Tips:
Use fun frog-themed decorations or music to enhance the activity's atmosphere.
Encourage creativity by letting children suggest their own jumping variations.
Jumping Like Frogs! is a great way to introduce basic jumping techniques in a fun and engaging way, fostering gross motor skill development and a love for physical activity in young children

Jumping Extension Activities (Optional):
Here are some additional activities you can incorporate into Jumping Like Frogs! to cater to a wider range of abilities or add further challenges for older children.

Jumping with Beanbags: Children hold a beanbag in one or both hands while jumping. This adds a balance challenge and encourages coordination.

Target Practice: Set up hula hoops or buckets at varying distances. Children jump and try to land with both feet inside the target. This adds an aiming element and challenges jumping accuracy.

Froggy Races: Divide children into pairs and have them race while jumping together, side-by-side, with their arms linked. This promotes teamwork and coordination.

Jumping Mazes: Create a simple maze on the floor using masking tape or chalk. Children jump from one designated spot to another, navigating the maze without stepping outside the lines.

Jumping Animals:  Explore the jumping styles of different animals. Children can try jumping like kangaroos (powerful leg extension), rabbits (small hops with good posture), or squirrels (landing on all fours).

Safety Considerations:
Ensure the activity space is free from obstacles and has a safe, cushioned surface for jumping.
Instruct children to land softly on both feet and avoid jumping from heights that could cause injury.
Supervise children closely during jumping activities, especially younger ones.

Variations

Jumping Relay Race: Divide students into teams and have them jump to a designated point and back, relaying the jumping action to the next teammate. This promotes teamwork and friendly competition.
Froggy Says: Play a modified version of Simon Says. The instructor calls out jumping actions like "froggy hop," "froggy leap," or "froggy squat jump," and children follow the instructions.
Parachute Play (Optional): If you have a large parachute, children can hold onto the edges while adults gently move it up and down. Encourage them to jump as the parachute rises and squat as it falls.

Coaching Tips

Focus on fun and participation, not perfection.
Modify activities based on the age and skill level of the children.
Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate each child's progress.
Ensure enough space for jumping without bumping into others.
Remind children to bend their knees slightly before jumping and land softly to avoid injury.

Equipment/Material Required

Masking tape or cones (optional, to mark jumping areas)
Open space large enough for children to jump comfortably
Music player (optional)
