Letter Walk ABC

Learning Outcomes

Develop locomotor skills: walking, skipping, hopping, running.
Practice body awareness and spatial orientation.
Recognize and identify upper and lowercase letters.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (5 minutes):

Play some upbeat music and have the children move around freely, encouraging them to walk, skip, hop, and run.
Lead some simple stretches like reaching for the sky, touching your toes, and arm circles.
Activity (15 minutes):

Scatter the foam letters around the designated play area. You can arrange them randomly or spell out a simple word for the children to find.
Explain to the children that they are going on a letter walk!
Call out a letter (upper or lowercase) and instruct the children to find that letter by walking.
Once they find the letter, they can perform an action related to the letter sound.
For example, for "S" they can slither like a snake, for "J" they can jump, for "B" they can hop like a bunny.
After a few rounds, change the instructions. You can ask them to:
Hop on one foot to the letter "D."
Run to the letter "F."
Walk backwards to the letter "M."
If you have cones, set them up as a small obstacle course that the children need to navigate while searching for the letters.
Cool-down (5 minutes):

Play some calming music and have the children walk slowly around the play area.
Lead some gentle stretches like rolling their shoulders and bending side to side.
Differentiation:

For younger children, you can use only uppercase letters or focus on a few familiar letters.
For older children, you can challenge them to find both the uppercase and lowercase versions of the same letter.
You can incorporate spelling by calling out simple words for the children to find the letters and put them in order.
Additional Ideas:

Have the children take turns calling out letters for their peers to find.
Hide small objects under some of the letters and have the children search for them after finding the letter.
Safety:

Ensure the play area is free of hazards.
Monitor the children closely while they are moving around.
Modify the activity as needed to ensure the safety of all participants.
This lesson plan is designed to be fun and engaging for preschoolers. By incorporating movement, letter recognition, and creative actions, children will develop their physical skills and cognitive abilities in a positive and playful environment.
