Description Of Activity

Let's Hop Like Kangaroos!

Warm-Up (5 minutes): Start with some fun warm-up exercises to get the blood flowing and muscles loose. Here are some ideas:
Marching: March around the space for a minute, pretending to be soldiers.
Arm Circles: Make big circles with your arms, forward and backward, for 30 seconds each.
Jumping Jacks: Do jumping jacks for 30 seconds, encouraging big jumps.

Introduction (2 minutes):
Gather the children in a circle and show them a picture or stuffed animal of a kangaroo.
Ask them: "What sound does a kangaroo make?" (Encourage them to make the hopping sound together: "Boing, boing, boing!")
Explain that kangaroos are amazing jumpers and that today, they'll get to move like kangaroos!

Kangaroo Hops (10 minutes):
Instruct the children to stand with their feet together and arms bent at their elbows, like little kangaroo paws.
Lead them through different hopping variations:
Small hops: Hop on the spot, making small jumps with bent knees.
Big hops: Encourage bigger jumps, reaching for the sky with their "paws."
Hopping Races: Divide the children into pairs and have them race each other across the space by hopping.
Follow the Leader: Choose a child to be the leader and have them hop in different directions (forward, backward, sideways). The other children follow the leader, hopping along.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
After all the hopping fun, it's time to cool down. Have the children walk slowly around the space for a minute.
Encourage them to stretch their legs by reaching for their toes and bending at the waist.
Play some calming music (optional) and have the children sit down and relax.
Tips:

Demonstrate all the hopping variations yourself so the children can see what to do.
Modify the activity based on the children's abilities. Younger children may need more support with their balance while hopping.
Use fun and encouraging language to keep the children engaged.
Make it a game! Award points for the biggest hops or the fastest hop races.
Feel free to add props like paper lunch bags decorated as kangaroo pouches or make kangaroo masks for extra fun!
Differentiation:

For children who need more support, you can have them hop while holding onto a table or chair.
For more advanced children, you can challenge them to hop over small obstacles, like beanbags or cones.
This activity provides a fun and engaging way for preschoolers to develop their gross motor skills, coordination, and balance. It also encourages imagination and creativity through playful movement.

Equipment/Material Required
