Activity
Develop gross motor skills: walking, jumping, hopping.
Enhance body coordination and rhythm.
Foster creativity and self-expression through movement.
Encourage social interaction and participation.
Warm-up :
Clapping March: Play slow-tempo music. Instruct children to march in a circle, clapping their hands to the beat.
Animal Walk: Change the music to a medium tempo. Call out different animals (e.g., bear, bunny, snake). Children mimic the animal's walk or slither around the space.
Main Activity :
Walking on the Beat: Play a song with a clear beat. Explain that walking can be fast or slow depending on the music. Guide children to walk around the space, fast when the music is fast, slow when it's slow.
Jumping for Joy: Play an upbeat song. Instruct children to jump in place whenever they hear a specific sound in the music (e.g., a high note, or a cymbal crash).
Hopping Hoedown: Play a lively song. Have children hold hands in small circles. On the beat, they all hop together on one foot around the circle. Switch feet after a few hops.
Move Like the Music! Play a variety of music with different tempos and styles. Encourage children to move their bodies freely, expressing how the music makes them feel. You can prompt them with ideas like tiptoeing for quiet music, stomping for loud music, and wiggling for silly music.
Cool-down:
Stretch and Sing: Play calming music. Lead children through simple stretches like reaching for the sky, touching their toes, and rolling their shoulders. Sing a familiar song about relaxation while stretching.
Freeze Dance: Play a fun song. Children move freely. When the music stops, they all freeze in silly poses. Restart the music and continue until the end.
Adaptations:
For younger children, focus on walking and jumping, simplifying the movements.
For older children, add challenges like hopping on one foot for longer distances or incorporating props like scarves or beanbags into their movements.
Safety Tips:
Ensure the space is free of obstacles.
Supervise children closely, especially during jumping activities.
Encourage children to move at their own pace and comfort level.
Open space with enough room for movement.
Age-appropriate music with a variety of tempos (slow, medium, fast).
Optional props (scarves, ribbons, beanbags) can be added for extra fun.
