Activity
Develop locomotor skills (running, skipping, jumping)
Practice body awareness and spatial orientation
Improve gross motor coordination
Enhance social skills through partner work and cooperation
Foster creativity and imagination.
Warm-Up :
Jumping Jacks: Play upbeat music and encourage children to jump with their legs apart and arms raised overhead, then jump back to the starting position.
Animal Walks: Lead the children in animal walks, mimicking how different animals move (e.g., walking like a bear on all fours, hopping like a bunny, slithering like a snake).
Main Activity:
Partner Up: Have students find a partner and stand facing each other.
Mirror, Mirror: Explain that they will be playing "Mirror Image." One student will be the leader (the mirror) and the other will be the follower.
Move and Mimic: The leader will start by making different movements (e.g., jumping, hopping, skipping, side-shuffling, tiptoeing, arm circles, etc.). The follower must try their best to copy the leader's movements as a mirror image (doing the opposite movement if facing each other).
Switch Roles: After a minute or two, instruct the partners to switch roles. The follower becomes the leader and creates new movements for their partner to mimic.
Freeze Dance: Occasionally, shout "Freeze!" Everyone must stop moving and hold their positions. Play some music again and continue mirroring after a few seconds.
Cool-Down :
Parachute Play: Gather the children around a large parachute. Sing songs and chant rhymes while shaking and lifting the parachute together.
Animal Stretches: Lead the children in gentle stretches by pretending to be different animals (e.g., reach for the sky like a giraffe, touch your toes like a cat).
Adaptations:
Younger children may need help finding partners or understanding the mirror concept. Demonstrate the movements yourself with a partner for better visualization.
For a more challenging activity, have children mirror each other while walking in a straight line or moving around cones.
Offer additional props like scarves, beanbags, or hoops for the children to incorporate into their movements.
Safety Tips:
Ensure the space is clear of any obstacles.
Encourage children to move at a comfortable pace and avoid collisions.
Remind children to listen for instructions and take breaks when needed.
Fun Tip:
Play different types of music throughout the activity to add variety and energy.
This lesson plan provides a fun and engaging way for preschoolers to get active, develop important physical skills, and work on cooperation with their peers.
