Activity
Students will be able to demonstrate a forward straddle roll with proper form (keeping legs straight, tucking chin, and using arms for support).
Students will develop balance and coordination.
Students will participate in activities that promote teamwork and following directions.
Activity 1: Animal Train Roll
Divide students into groups of 4-5. Each group becomes an "animal train."
Assign each student a role: head (leads the train), middle cars (hold onto the person in front), and tail (last person).
Demonstrate a forward straddle roll, emphasizing keeping legs straight and tucking chin.
The head of the train practices a forward straddle roll on the mat.
Once finished, the head holds a hand out behind them.
The second student performs a straddle roll, placing their hands on the head's outstretched hand and pushing off to roll. This continues for all students on the train.
Groups take turns practicing the animal train roll. Encourage different animal sounds for added fun!
Modifications:
For younger students, allow them to bend their knees slightly during the roll.
If space is limited, have students perform the rolls in a line instead of a group.
Activity 2: Beach Ball Bonanza
Scatter soft playground balls around the play area.
Instruct students to walk around the play area pretending to be at the beach.
Blow the whistle or call out a command (e.g., "Big wave!")
Upon the signal, students find a ball, squat down, and place the ball between their legs (straddle position).
Students then perform a forward straddle roll over the ball, pushing off with their hands to stand up on the other side.
Students continue walking and repeat when they hear the signal again.
Modifications:
Use larger balls for younger students or those who need more support.
Allow students to roll over the balls without using their hands for an added challenge (for older students).
Activity3: Tunnel Roll Challenge
Create a tunnel using chairs or benches lined up side-by-side.
Demonstrate a forward straddle roll, emphasizing keeping the body straight and rolling through the tunnel.
Students take turns practicing rolling through the tunnel one at a time.
Once comfortable, introduce a challenge: students roll through the tunnel while carrying a beanbag on their head (encourages proper head position).
Modifications:
Increase the tunnel height for taller students.
Use pool noodles or hula hoops held by adults to create a wider and more flexible tunnel for students who need more space.
Remember:
Always supervise students closely during these activities.
Provide positive reinforcement and praise students for their effort.
Modify the activities as needed to accommodate different skill levels.
Make it fun! Laughter and enjoyment are key to promoting a love for physical activity.
Mats (enough for each student)
Soft playground balls (optional)
