Activity
Students will be able to demonstrate the proper form of the Attention Stance (Charyeot Sogi)
Students will understand the importance of the Attention Stance in Taekwondo etiquette.
Play Area Setup:
Open space where students can move freely without bumping into each other.
Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light jogging or jumping jacks (1 minute)
Arm circles (forward and backward) (30 seconds each)
Leg swings (front and back) (30 seconds each)
Activity Description (10 minutes):
Explain that the Attention Stance, also called Charyeot Sogi, is used to show respect and focus during class.
Demonstrate the stance: Stand tall with feet together, heels touching, and toes pointed forward. Make fists with your hands and place them at your sides with thumbs pointed upwards. Back straight, shoulders relaxed, and eyes looking forward.
Have students practice getting into the stance one step at a time, focusing on each body part's position.
Once students can enter the stance, practice holding it for short durations (5-10 seconds).
Introduce the Korean term "Charyeot!" (pronounced cha-rut). Explain that this is the command to come into Attention Stance.
Practice responding to the "Charyeot!" command by quickly and correctly assuming the stance.
Mirror Activity: Divide students into pairs. One student demonstrates entering the stance, while the other mirrors their movements. Then, they switch roles.
"Simon Says Charyeot!" Play a modified game of Simon Says. The instructor gives instructions like "Simon Says touch your toes!" or "Jump three times!" Occasionally, yell "Charyeot!" Students must only respond to the "Charyeot!" command by assuming the Attention Stance.
Ensure students keep their backs straight and shoulders relaxed.
Fists should be lightly clenched, not tight.
Focus on even weight distribution on both feet.
Encourage good posture and eye contact while holding the stance.
