Attention Stance - Mastering the Attention Stance

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to demonstrate the Attention Stance with proper posture and alignment.
Students will understand the importance of the Attention Stance in Taekwondo etiquette.
Students will be able to transition smoothly into the Attention Stance from other stances.

Description Of Activity

Play Area Setup:
Open and clear space with enough room for students to move freely without bumping into each other.
Mirrors can be placed along a wall if available for the mirror exercise variation.

Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light jogging or jumping jacks (1 minute)
Arm circles (forward and backward) (30 seconds each)
Leg swings (front and back) (30 seconds each)
Neck rolls (clockwise and counter-clockwise) (30 seconds each)

a. Demonstration:
Instructor demonstrates the Attention Stance with clear explanations:
Feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointed forward.
Knees slightly bent, weight evenly distributed.
Back straight, core engaged.
Shoulders relaxed, arms by your sides.
Palms open, fingers together, slightly touching the sides of your thighs.
Head held high, eyes focused forward.

b. Practice:
Students practice the Attention Stance individually, focusing on each element.
Instructor provides feedback and corrects posture as needed.

c. Partnered Practice:
Students pair up and take turns observing each other's Attention Stance.
Partners offer constructive feedback on posture and alignment.

d. Transition Practice:
Students practice transitioning into the Attention Stance from other basic stances (e.g., Horse Stance, Walking Stance).
Instructor emphasizes the importance of maintaining proper Attention Stance after transitions.

Variations

a. Mirror Exercise:
Students practice the Attention Stance facing a mirror, allowing them to visually assess their form.
b. Blindfolded Challenge:
Students attempt the Attention Stance blindfolded, focusing on proper body awareness.
c. Command Practice:
Instructor calls out random commands (e.g., "Attention!", "Ready!") and students practice transitioning smoothly into the Attention Stance.

Emphasize the importance of good posture and proper alignment throughout the body.
Encourage students to relax their shoulders and keep their core engaged.
Use clear and concise language when providing feedback.
Celebrate students' progress and encourage them to practice regularly.
