Stationary Dribble -Dribble Tag

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to dribble a basketball with both hands while maintaining a balanced athletic stance.
Students will be able to control the bounce of the ball, keeping it low to the ground.
Students will be able to dribble the ball continuously without stopping or double dribbling.

Description Of Activity

Setup:
Clear a spacious area where students can move freely without bumping into each other.
Arrange cones in a circle formation (optional) for students to dribble around.
Warm-up (5 minutes):

Light jog around the court for 2 minutes.
Dynamic stretches focusing on arms, legs, and core (arm circles, leg swings, torso twists).
Bouncing the ball on the ground a few times with each hand.

Body Position: Gather students in a huddle. Explain the importance of a good body position for dribbling. Demonstrate a low athletic stance with knees slightly bent, feet shoulder-width apart, back straight, and head up.
Fingertip control: Ask students to hold the ball with their fingertips, not their palms. Explain how fingertips provide better control over the dribble.
Dribble with One Hand: Have students start by dribbling with their dominant hand, focusing on pushing the ball down toward the ground with each dribble. Emphasize keeping the dribble low (around their knees) and maintaining a balanced stance.
Switch Hands: Once students are comfortable dribbling with their dominant hand, have them switch to their non-dominant hand and practice maintaining control.
Continuous Dribble: Encourage students to continuously dribble with both hands, focusing on a smooth transition between hands. Count repetitions or set a time limit to challenge them.
Dribble Around Cones (Optional): Set up cones in a circle. Have students dribble around the cones with their right hand, then switch to their left hand for another round.

Activity: Dribble Tag:
Divide the class into two teams.
Designate a playing area.
One player from each team starts with a ball and tries to tag (dribble the ball within arm's reach) players from the opposite team.
Players who get tagged must sit out for a designated time (5-10 seconds) before rejoining the game.
The team with the most players remaining at the end of the time limit wins.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for arms, legs, and core.
Walk around the court for a few minutes to slow down heart rate.

Coaching Tips

Be patient and encouraging. Learning to dribble takes practice.
Focus on proper technique over speed initially.
Break down the skill into smaller steps for better understanding.
Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate improvements.
Make it fun! Use games and activities to keep students engaged.
Dribble with two balls at the same time (advanced).
Dribble behind the back (advanced).
