Activity
Students will be able to dribble the basketball with a strong, controlled pound dribble.
Students will demonstrate proper hand and body positioning for the pound dribble.
Clear a large open space in the gym or playing area.
Gather students in a circle at one end of the space.
Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light jog around the perimeter of the space.
Dynamic stretches like arm circles, leg swings, and jumping jacks.
Teaching the Pound Dribble (15 minutes):
The pound dribble is a fundamental basketball skill that helps players maintain control of the ball while dribbling at full speed. This lesson plan will introduce students in grades 4-5 to the pound dribble technique through a fun and engaging activity.
Demonstration:
Show students how to hold the ball with fingers spread wide for good control.
Demonstrate a proper athletic stance: knees slightly bent, back straight, head up.
Dribble the ball forcefully down towards the ground, using the fingers to push the ball back up with each dribble. Emphasize keeping the dribble low to the ground.
Practice with Verbal Cues:
Have students stand in place and practice dribbling with their dominant hand, focusing on the strong push and controlled recovery of the ball. Use cues like "push" and "up" to guide their movement.
Repeat with the non-dominant hand.
Encourage students to keep their eyes up while dribbling and focus on staying balanced.
Progression:
Once students are comfortable dribbling in place, have them walk and dribble simultaneously, maintaining the pound dribble technique.
Introduce a fun challenge! Have students dribble around cones placed randomly around the space, focusing on maintaining control and changing direction with the pound dribble.
Activity: Dribble Tag (10 minutes):
Divide students into equal teams.
Designate a playing area (the entire gym or a designated zone).
One player from each team is "It". Their goal is to tag players from the opposite team by tapping the ball on their hand while dribbling.
Players who are tagged must sit out for a short period (5 seconds) before rejoining the game.
The team with the most players remaining at the end of the designated time wins!
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for major muscle groups.
Light walking or jogging to bring heart rate down.
Dribble with two basketballs at the same time (advanced).
Dribble with alternating hands while walking or jogging.
Dribble with a partner, mirroring each other's movements.
Coaching Tips:
Focus on positive reinforcement and encourage students' efforts.
Break down the skill into smaller steps for easier learning.
Offer individual feedback and corrections as needed.
Make it fun! Use games and activities to keep students engaged.
Observe students throughout the lesson to assess their understanding of the pound dribble technique.
Look for:
Proper hand and body positioning.
Strong push and controlled recovery of the ball.
Ability to dribble while maintaining control and changing direction.
Basketball for each student
