Figure 8 Ball Wraps

Learning Outcomes

Improve hand-eye coordination and ball handling skills.
Enhance agility and footwork.
Increase ball control and dribble technique.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court for 2 minutes.
Jumping jacks or jumping rope for 1 minute.
Arm circles forward and backward for 30 seconds each.
High knees and butt kicks for 30 seconds each.
Dribble slowly around the court for 1 minute, focusing on changing hands.

Activity Description (10-15 minutes):
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Hold the basketball comfortably in your dominant hand.
Begin by dribbling the ball between your legs in a figure-eight pattern. The ball should go in front of one leg, then behind the other leg, and then back in front of the first leg to complete the figure eight.
Focus on maintaining a low dribble and keeping your eyes on the ball as it moves around your legs.
Once comfortable with your dominant hand, switch hands and repeat the figure-eight dribble with your non-dominant hand.
Gradually increase the speed of your dribble as you gain control.

Progression:
Once you can comfortably dribble the figure eight with both hands, try doing it while walking forward.
Increase the challenge by adding lateral movement (side shuffles) while dribbling the figure eight.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Walk around the court for 2 minutes.
Stretch your arms, legs, and core for 1 minute each.
Hold light static stretches for 15-30 seconds each.

Additional Notes:
This drill is suitable for players of all skill levels.
Start with short intervals and gradually increase the duration as you improve.
Make sure to focus on proper form and control over speed.
This drill can be done individually or with a partner.
By following these steps and incorporating the coaching tips, you can effectively utilize the Figure 8 Ball Wraps drill to enhance your basketball ball handling skills and agility.

Variations

Dribble the figure eight with two basketballs at the same time (advanced).
Dribble the figure eight around cones placed on the court.

Coaching Tips

Keep your core engaged and back straight throughout the drill.
Focus on a smooth and controlled dribble, not necessarily speed.
Maintain good posture with your head up, not looking down at the ball.
Practice with both hands equally to improve ambidexterity.
