Pound Dribble

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to dribble the basketball using the pound dribble technique with proper hand placement and fingertip control.
Students will be able to maintain a low athletic stance while dribbling the pound dribble.

Description Of Activity

The pound dribble is a fundamental dribbling technique that allows players to maintain close control of the ball in tight spaces while keeping their head up for better court vision.  This lesson will introduce students to the pound dribble and its proper execution.

Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court.
High knees, butt kicks, jumping jacks (light cardio to get blood flowing).
Arm circles forward and backward (to loosen shoulders).
Static stretches for legs and core (hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds).
Instruction (15 minutes):

Demonstration:
Coach demonstrates the pound dribble:
Low athletic stance with knees bent and eyes up.
The ball is held close to the body, fingertips spread apart on the top and sides of the ball.
Dribble by pushing the ball down towards the ground with a quick flick of the wrists, not by slapping the ball.
Focus on maintaining control and keeping the dribble low.

Explanation:
Explain the importance of the pound dribble for maintaining control in tight spaces.
Discuss proper hand placement, fingertip control, and a low athletic stance.
Stationary Dribble Practice:

Students practice dribbling the pound dribble in a stationary position with both their dominant and non-dominant hands.
The coach emphasizes control, low dribble, and keeping eyes up.

Walking Dribble:
Students begin walking while dribbling the pound dribble with both hands.
Focus on maintaining a low center of gravity and keeping the dribble tight to the body.

Progression (Optional):
Introduce cones placed in a straight line: Students dribble the pound dribble around the cones while maintaining control and focus.
Gradually increase the distance between cones as students improve.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court.
Gentle stretches for legs, arms, and core (hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds).

Variations

Dribble with change of direction: Students practice dribbling the pound dribble and changing directions by stopping, taking a shuffle step, and resuming the dribble in the new direction.
Partner dribble: Students dribble the pound dribble while facing a partner, maintaining control and focus while being aware of their partner's movements.

Coaching Tips

Coaching Tips:
Emphasize a soft touch on the dribble, not slapping the ball.
Encourage a low athletic stance for better balance and control.
Remind students to keep their eyes up while dribbling.
Provide positive reinforcement and offer corrections throughout the practice.
Break down the dribble into smaller steps if students struggle with the full motion.

Observe students' dribbling technique: hand placement, fingertip control, stance, and dribble height.
Monitor their ability to maintain control of the ball while dribbling and changing direction.
Provide feedback and encouragement throughout the practice.
Practice the pound dribble while incorporating basic offensive moves like pivoting and dribble handoffs.
Challenge students to dribble a figure eight pattern using the pound dribble.
