Low Dribble

Learning Outcomes

Teach students how to dribble the basketball with a low center of gravity, making it harder for defenders to steal the ball.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court for 2 minutes.
Dynamic stretches like arm circles, leg swings, and jumping jacks for 3 minutes.

Explain the Low Dribble:
Show students how basketball players keep the ball low to the ground when dribbling.
Explain that this makes it harder for defenders to reach and steal the ball.
Body Position:- Ask students to stand with their feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent.
Have them bend at the hips and push their hips back slightly, keeping their back straight.
This is their low dribble posture.

Dribble with One Hand (5 minutes):- Each student dribbles with their dominant hand, focusing on using their fingertips to control the ball.
Remind them to keep the ball low, bouncing it between their legs and the ground.
Encourage them to keep their eyes up at all times so they can see the court and any defenders.
Switch Hands (5 minutes):- Have students switch to dribbling with their non-dominant hand while maintaining a low posture and fingertip control.

Dribble Tag:- Divide the class into two groups.
One group tries to dribble around the court while the other group tries to tag their ball with their hands (not grabbing).
Players who get tagged must stop dribbling and complete a jumping jack before restarting.
Switch groups after a few minutes.

Cone Dribble Challenge :
Set up cones in a line, spaced a few feet apart.
Students dribble the ball around each cone, staying low and maintaining control.
Gradually increase the speed as they get comfortable.

Partner Dribble Race:
Divide the class into pairs.
Partners line up side-by-side at one end of the court.
On the coach's signal, both players dribble the ball low to the other end of the court, staying low and maintaining control.
The first partner to reach the end wins a point for their team.

Progression:
Key Points: Emphasize low dribble posture with knees bent and hips back.
Focus on using fingertips for better ball control.
Keep eyes up to see the court and defenders.
Make sure students are dribbling with both their dominant and non-dominant hands.

Variations

As students get comfortable with the low dribble, gradually increase the speed of the drills.
Introduce basic moves like crossovers or behind-the-back dribbles while staying low.
