Students will learn the importance of keeping their head up while dribbling.
Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court for 2 minutes.
Jumping jacks or jumping in place for 1 minute.
Arm circles forward and backward for 1 minute.
Dribble Drive Down Low (15 minutes):
Basic Low Dribble: Divide students into pairs. Each student dribbles the basketball around cones placed at a moderate distance. Emphasize a low posture with knees bent and back straight. Hands should stay low on the ball with fingertips providing control.
Head Up Drill: Students continue dribbling around cones but now focus on keeping their heads up while dribbling. A coach can walk around calling out colors or shapes for students to identify without looking down.
Speed Drills: Once comfortable, students can practice dribbling at different speeds slow controlled dribble, fast dribble with bursts of speed.
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Gentle stretches for major muscle groups, focusing on arms, shoulders, and legs.
Obstacle Course: Set up a simple obstacle course using cones, benches, or other gym equipment. Students dribble the basketball while navigating the course, practicing maneuvering and keeping their low dribble while changing direction.
Dribble and Shoot: After mastering the low dribble, introduce a shooting element. Students dribble at low speed toward a designated area and then take a layup shot. This combines low dribble with a basic finishing move.
Dribble Tag: Play a game of dribble tag where one student is "it" and tries to tag others by tapping the ball they are dribbling. Students must maintain their low dribble while dodging the tagger.
Partner Dribble Race: Divide students into pairs and have them race each other while dribbling the basketball around cones placed at opposite ends of the court. Focus on a low center of gravity with knees bent and back straight.
Encourage students to use their fingertips for better control of the ball.
Remind students to keep their heads up while dribbling to see upcoming movements.
Offer positive reinforcement and encouragement throughout the activity.
Observe students' technique while dribbling, focusing on posture, hand position, and head placement.
See if students can maintain their low dribble while completing the drills and variations.
Encourage self-assessment by asking students to reflect on their progress and areas for improvement.
For students who struggle with the low dribble, allow them to use a lighter ball or practice without cones initially.
For advanced students, challenge them to dribble with their non-dominant hand or incorporate behind-the-back dribbles while maintaining a low posture.
