Dribble Like a Star: Mastering the High Dribble
Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court for 2 minutes.
Dynamic stretches focusing on arms, legs, and core (arm circles, leg swings, jumping jacks).
High Dribble Instruction :
Ball Position: Students stand with feet shoulder-width apart and the basketball held in front of their bodies with both hands. Elbows should be slightly bent, and the ball should be at chest height.
Dribble Technique: Demonstrate and explain the dribble. Focus on using fingertips to push the ball down towards the ground and then letting it bounce back up to their hands.
Hand Position: Emphasize keeping fingers spread wide on the ball for better control.
Posture: Remind students to maintain a tall posture with head up while dribbling.
Practice: Students begin dribbling in place with both hands, focusing on high dribbles (bounces reaching their waist or above).
Progression: Once comfortable dribbling in place, have students walk forward while dribbling, maintaining the high dribble. Gradually increase walking speed to a slow jog.
Dribble Obstacle Course:
Set up cones or markers in a variety of patterns (straight line, zig-zag, circle).
Students dribble the basketball while navigating the obstacle course, focusing on maintaining a high dribble and good ball control around the obstacles.
Encourage friendly competition and cheer each other on.
Cool Down:
Gentle stretches (arm raises, hamstring stretches, torso twists).
Light jog followed by walking laps.
Partner Dribble: Students dribble side-by-side with a partner, maintaining a high dribble and trying not to bump the ball with each other.
Dribble Tag: Play a modified game of tag where students can only tag each other by tapping the ball with their own. Encourage high dribbles and quick changes of direction.
Dribble with Dribble: Dribble with two basketballs simultaneously, one in each hand, focusing on maintaining a high dribble for both. (Advanced)
Positive Reinforcement: Praise students for good technique and effort.
Individual Attention: Offer personalized feedback and corrections to each student as needed.
Make it Fun: Use games and variations to keep the learning process engaging.
Focus on Progress: Celebrate improvements and encourage continued practice.
Safety: Ensure enough space for dribbling and remind students to watch out for each other.
Basketballs (one per student)
Cones or markers (optional for obstacle course)
