Description Of Activity
Warm-up: Begin with a fun warm-up game such as "Follow the Leader" where students mimic dribbling movements led by the teacher or a designated leader. This can include crossovers, between-the-legs, and behind-the-back dribbles.
High Dribble Introduction (5 minutes): Explain the concept of the high dribble to the students, demonstrating how to dribble the ball from waist to shoulder height using fingertips for control.
High Dribble Drills and Games :
Dribble Tag: Players dribble around the court while avoiding being tagged by designated "taggers." This encourages quick dribbling and maneuvering skills.
Dribble Races: Divide the class into teams and have them race while dribbling the ball using the high dribble technique. The first team to finish wins.
Skill Development (15 minutes):
Have students pair up and practice dribbling while moving around cones or markers set up in a zigzag pattern.
Encourage students to experiment with different dribbling heights and speeds, focusing on control and coordination.
Cool Down :
Lead students through a series of static stretches focusing on the arms, legs, and core muscles used during dribbling.
Variations
Dribble Relay Race: Divide the class into teams. Each team must dribble the ball to a designated spot and back, passing the ball to the next teammate in line.
Dribble Freeze: Players dribble around the court. When the coach calls out "Freeze!" players must stop dribbling and freeze in place. This game helps improve dribbling control and reaction time.
Coaching Tips
Encourage students to keep their heads up and scan the court while dribbling to be aware of their surroundings.
Emphasize the importance of using fingertips for control and keeping the ball within waist to shoulder height.
Provide positive reinforcement and constructive feedback to motivate students to improve their dribbling skills.
