Activity
Improve close ball control and dribbling technique.
Enhance agility and footwork coordination.
Develop faster reaction times with the ball.
Warm-up (10 minutes):
Light jog around the field for 2 minutes.
Dynamic stretches focusing on ankles, knees, and hips (lunges, leg swings, butt kicks).
Practice dribbling the ball with both feet for 3 minutes (focusing on light touches and good posture).
Activity Description (20 minutes):
Set-up: Place 6 cones in a straight line, spaced 1 yard apart. You can adjust the distance as players get comfortable (wider for beginners, closer for advanced players).
Dribble Drill: Players start behind the first cone with the ball at their feet. They begin dribbling, focusing on close touches with the inside and outside of their feet. Weave the ball between each cone, maintaining a low center of gravity and keeping their head up.
Change of Direction: Once they reach the last cone, they perform a quick turn (e.g., stop, touch turn, or scissors) and dribble back through the cones in the opposite direction.
Repeat: Players continue dribbling back and forth between the cones for a set time (2 minutes) or a set number of repetitions (e.g., 5 times through).
Progression: Gradually increase the difficulty by:
Using only one foot for the entire drill.
Adding an extra touch between each cone.
Increasing the speed of the dribbling.
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Gentle walking or jog for 2 minutes.
Static stretches focus on major muscle groups used during the activity (hamstrings, quads, calves).
Encourage players to keep their eyes on the ball most of the time, with occasional glances up to see where they're going.
Focus on a light touch on the ball for better control.
Remind players to keep their knees slightly bent and their body low for better agility.
Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate improvements.
Cone Maze: Set up cones in a random pattern instead of a straight line. Players must dribble through the maze, navigating around the cones while maintaining control of the ball.
Partner Drill: Have players work in pairs, dribbling around cones while their partner tries to tag their ball. Players switch roles after a set time.
Timed Dribbling: Time players as they dribble through the cones (back and forth). See if they can beat their own time each round.
This lesson plan provides a basic structure for the Cone Dribbling Frenzy activity. Feel free to adjust the difficulty, variations, and duration based on the age and skill level of your players. Have fun and keep dribbling!
Inside Step Over Similar to the original, but use the sole of your dominant foot to roll the ball across your body before stepping over with the other foot.
Step Over with Change of Direction: After completing the Step Over, incorporate a sharp change of direction (left or right) to create space from imaginary defenders.
Dribbling Race with Step Overs: Divide players into teams and have them dribble a set distance, incorporating Step Overs throughout. The team that finishes first wins.
Focus on small, controlled movements initially.
Emphasize keeping the ball close to your feet for better control.
Encourage players to practice with both their dominant and non-dominant foot.
Provide positive reinforcement and offer corrections in a constructive way.
