Jumping And Hopping on Music

Learning Outcomes

Students will develop locomotor skills by jumping and hopping to music.
Students will practice coordination and rhythm by following changes in tempo and movement cues.
Students will explore creative movement and express themselves through joyful movement experiences.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up :
Play some upbeat music and encourage students to move around freely with activities like marching, skipping, jumping jacks, and arm circles. This warms up their muscles and gets them energized.

Introduction :
Gather students in a circle and explain they'll be having a jumping and hopping party with music! Introduce different jumping and hopping styles:

Jumping: Regular jumps with two feet together.
Hopping: Jumping on one leg at a time, alternating legs quickly.

Jumping and Hopping Fun :
Play a variety of upbeat music with different tempos (slow, fast, medium).
When the music starts, instruct students to jump or hop based on the tempo:
Slow music: Encourage low jumps with soft landings.
Fast music: Encourage high jumps or fast hopping with quick leg changes.
Medium music: Allow students to choose between jumping or hopping freely.
Throughout the activity, change the instructions by calling out specific jumping and hopping
Jumping Jacks: Jump with arms and legs out, then jump with arms and legs together.
Frog Hops: Squat low and jump forward with both feet like a frog.
Bunny Hops: Hop on one leg for a few beats, then switch to the other leg.

Freeze Fun:
Introduce a fun element where the music stops unexpectedly.
When the music stops, students must freeze in their jumping or hopping pose.
Play some silly sound effects or animal noises when the music stops to add humor.
Restart the music and continue jumping and hopping variations.

Cool-down:
Play some calming music and have students walk slowly around the play area, stretching their arms and legs gently.

Review and Reflection:
Discuss the activity briefly. Ask students which jumping or hopping style they enjoyed the most. Encourage them to share their experiences and celebrate their success in moving their bodies and following the music.

Variations

Obstacle Course (Optional): Set up a simple obstacle course with cones or pillows (soft objects for safety). Students navigate the course while jumping and hopping according to the music cues.
Animal Jumps and Hops: Assign specific jumping or hopping styles to different animals. Play animal sound effects when it's time to jump or hop like a particular animal (e.g., kangaroo jumps, rabbit hops, frog squats).
Partner Jumps and Hops: Divide students into pairs and have them jump or hop together, holding hands or linking arms.

Coaching Tips

Focus on Fun: Keep the activity lighthearted and playful. Celebrate students' enthusiasm and creativity in their jumps and hops.
Positive Reinforcement: Offer praise and encouragement throughout the activity for their participation, effort, and following the music cues.
Individualized Support: Modify the activity for students who are struggling with coordination. Allow them to hold onto a wall or chair for support initially.
Clear Instructions: Clearly explain the different jumping and hopping styles before starting the activity.
Safety First: Ensure ample space for students to move around safely and avoid collisions.
