Taekwondo -Mastering the Walking Stance

Learning Outcomes

Develop proper posture and body alignment in the Walking Stance (Gunnun Sogi)
Improve balance and stability.
Enhance coordination and weight distribution.
Prepare for kicks and movements that utilize the Walking Stance.

Description Of Activity

This lesson plan focuses on refining the Walking Stance, a fundamental stance in Taekwondo. Students will practice proper alignment, weight distribution, footwork, and transitioning between the stance and other basic stances.

Warm-Up:
Begin with light cardio exercises like jumping jacks, high knees, and arm circles to prepare the body for movement. Include dynamic stretches like leg swings and torso twists.

Stance Demonstration:
Demonstrate the Walking Stance (Gunnun Sogi) for the students. Briefly explain the key points:
Feet are shoulder-width apart (may vary slightly depending on individual body proportions).
Front foot is slightly forward, pointing straight ahead.
Back foot is flat on the ground, angled slightly outward (around 15 degrees).
Knees are slightly bent, not locked.
Weight is distributed evenly between both legs, with a slight emphasis on the front foot.
Back is straight, core engaged, and shoulders relaxed.

Static Stance Practice:
Instruct students to assume the Walking Stance.
Encourage them to use mirrors (optional) or feel their body position to ensure proper alignment and weight distribution.
Have them hold the stance for short durations (e.g., 10 seconds), gradually increasing the hold time as they become more comfortable.
Focus on maintaining a neutral spine and keeping their core engaged throughout the hold.

Footwork Drills:
Introduce footwork drills to practice shifting weight and transitioning between the Walking Stance and other basic stances (e.g., Horse Stance - Joonbi Sogi).
Forward and Backward Stepping: Instruct students to step forward with the front foot, maintaining the Walking Stance, then bring the back foot up to meet it. Repeat by stepping back with the rear foot while maintaining proper stance alignment.
Lateral Stepping: Practice stepping sideways while maintaining the Walking Stance, shifting weight to the new leading leg.
Walking Transitions: Have students walk around the practice space, transitioning smoothly between the Walking Stance and another basic stance (e.g., Horse Stance) on designated cues.

Partner Practice (Optional):
Divide students into pairs and have them take turns guiding each other through the Walking Stance practice and footwork drills. This can offer peer feedback and enhance understanding.

Cool-Down:
Lead students in gentle static stretches like arm reaches, leg swings, and torso twists to cool down after the activity.

Variations

For beginners, start with shorter hold times in the static stance practice.
For advanced students, introduce variations like closing their eyes while holding the stance or adding light arm movements while maintaining balance and stance form.
You can incorporate basic blocking techniques (e.g., low block) practiced from the Walking Stance to connect the stance practice with self-defense applications.

Coaching Tips

Emphasize the importance of proper posture and alignment throughout the practice.
Focus on controlled movements during the footwork drills.
Encourage students to pay attention to body sensations to refine their balance and weight distribution.
Offer individual assistance to students who need help achieving proper stance form.
Provide positive reinforcement and celebrate their progress in mastering the Walking Stance.

Equipment/Material Required
