In this activity, students practice locomotor skills while exploring their ABCs. It incorporates various walking variations and letter recognition activities, catering to both physical and cognitive development.
Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music (optional) and encourage children to move around freely with light jumping jacks, arm circles, leg swings, and animal walks (pretending to be animals with different walking styles: bear walk, crab walk, etc.).
Introduction (5 minutes):
Gather the children and explain they will be going on an ABC adventure, exploring different ways to walk and recognize letters.
Briefly demonstrate walking with proper posture, focusing on keeping their backs straight and looking ahead.
Letter Walk Progression (20-25 minutes):
Basic Walking:
Scatter the foam letters on the floor or hold them up for children to see.
Instruct children to walk around the space, exploring different directions and speeds (slow walk, fast walk).
Encourage them to step over or around the letters without touching them.
Animal Walks:
Call out different animals and have children walk like that animal (e.g., bear walk, crab walk, tiptoe walk like a cat).
Letter Walks:
Spread the foam letters on the floor, leaving some space between them.
Call out a letter and instruct children to walk a specific way to get to that letter (e.g., skip to "A," hop to "B," tiptoe to "C").
Gradually increase the difficulty by calling out letter sequences (e.g., walk to "D," hop to "E," skip to "F").
Locomotor Challenges:
Spread the foam letters on the floor. Call out a locomotor movement (e.g., jump, hop, skip, crab walk) and a letter.
Children perform the movement and then find the designated letter.
Increase the challenge by calling out multiple movements and letters in sequence (e.g., jump twice, hop once, find "H").
Letter Formation Walk (Optional):
Use flashcards with large letters. Children walk around the space holding the flashcards, tracing the letter shape with their free hand in the air as they walk.
Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Play calming music and encourage children to walk around or stretch gently. This allows them to cool down and wind down after the activity.
Additional Tips:
Use brightly colored foam letters or flashcards to capture children's attention.
For younger children, focus more on the walking exploration and less on letter recognition.
Encourage creativity by letting children suggest their own walking styles or letter formations.

Parachute Play (Optional): If you have a large parachute, children can hold onto the edges while adults gently move it up and down. Encourage them to walk under the parachute as it rises and jog as it falls.
