Activity
Students will be able to demonstrate proper hand position, body posture, and throwing motion for the chest pass.
Students will be able to accurately chest pass the ball to a partner at various distances.
Students will be able to incorporate the chest pass while dribbling.
Warm-Up (5 minutes):
A light jog or jumping jacks to get the blood flowing.
Arm circles and leg swings to loosen up the upper and lower body.
High knees and butt kicks to increase heart rate and prepare for movement.
This lesson plan provides a basic framework for developing proper chest pass technique. By incorporating fun activities, positive reinforcement, and gradual progression, your students will be well on their way to becoming confident and accurate passers on the basketball court.
Hand Position:
Hold the ball comfortably in front of your chest with both hands.
Spread your fingers wide for better control and grip.
Your thumbs should be positioned directly behind the ball, pointing toward each other.
Body Posture:
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart for stability.
Keep your core engaged and back straight.
Slightly bend your knees for a more powerful push.
The Throw:
Initiate the pass by bringing the ball closer to your chest.
Tuck your elbows in close to your body for better control.
Step forward slightly with one foot (optional, can be either foot) for added power.
Extend your arms straight out in front of you at chest level, pushing the ball outwards.
Imagine you're giving a chest bump with the ball.
Follow through with your arms after the pass, ending with your hands pointing in the direction of the pass.
Station 1: Hand Placement & Throwing Motion:
Demonstration: Begin by demonstrating the chest pass, emphasizing the following:
Hand Position: Hold the ball in front of your chest with both hands, fingers spread, and thumbs pointing back at each other.
Body Posture: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and core engaged.
Throwing Motion: Bring the ball closer to your chest, tuck elbows in, step forward slightly (optional), extend arms straight out at chest level, push the ball with a smooth motion, and follow through with your arms after the pass.
Partner Practice: Divide students into pairs and have them stand facing each other a few feet apart. Guide them through practicing the hand position and throwing motion without the ball initially. Once comfortable, allow them to practice passing a tennis ball or lighter basketball back and forth, focusing on proper form.
Station 2: Target Practice:
Set Up: Set up cones at various distances (gradually increasing as skills improve) as targets.
Practice: Students take turns chest-passing the basketball, aiming to hit the target cones. Encourage them to focus on accuracy, a strong push, and following through with the pass.
Station 3: Dribble & Pass (5 minutes):
Set Up: Students pair up with one ball per pair.
Practice: One student dribbles the ball while the other runs alongside. The dribbler then stops, chest passes the ball to the running partner, who catches and repeats the drill. This incorporates dribbling with the chest pass, a crucial skill in basketball.
Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Light walking or gentle stretches to cool down and prevent injury.
Additional Tips:
Focus on creating a smooth push rather than just throwing the ball.
Keep your wrists firm throughout the motion for better accuracy.
Aim the pass at your teammate's chest level for easier catching.
Maintain eye contact with your teammate as you pass.
Younger students (Grades 3-5):
Use brightly colored tennis balls for a more engaging experience.
Play a passing tag game where students try to tag each other with gentle chest passes.
Older students (Grades 6-8):
Introduce variations like bounce passes (angled downwards) and overhead passes (for long distances).
Increase the speed of the dribble and pass the drill.
Start by focusing on proper technique before emphasizing power.
Break down the chest pass into steps (hand position, body posture, throwing motion) for easier learning.
Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate each student's progress.
Modify distances and drill complexity based on age and skill level.
Encourage communication and teamwork during partner activities.
Emphasize the importance of the chest pass for successful basketball plays.
