Description Of Activity

This fun-filled lesson plan introduces young children to the world of rhythmic dance through a variety of simple movements and lively music.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music.
Marching: Encourage children to march around the space, with high knees and arms swinging.
Skipping: Change the music to a skipping beat and have children skip together.
Animal Walks: Play a variety of animal sound effects (optional). Children imitate animal walks like hopping bunnies, waddling penguins, or tiptoeing cats.

Activity Breakdown (20 minutes):

1. Wiggle, Wobble, Freeze! (5 minutes):
Play lively music with a clear beat.
Wiggle: Instruct children to "wiggle" their bodies to the music, shaking their hips, arms, and legs.
Wobble: Change the instruction to "wobble" side-to-side, keeping knees slightly bent.
Freeze: When the music stops, everyone freezes in a place like a statue.
Repeat, changing up the "wiggle" and "wobble" instructions (e.g., wiggle shoulders, wiggle arms).

2. Scarf Sway (5 minutes):
Provide each child with a scarf or ribbon (optional).
Play calming music with a slower tempo.
Sway and Flow: Instruct children to hold the scarves up high and sway them gently back and forth as they move around the space.
Twirling: Change the instruction to twirl the scarves around their heads or waists as they move.
Encourage creative movement explorations with the scarves.

3. Partner Parade (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music with a marching beat.
Divide children into pairs.
Marching Parade: Pairs hold hands and march around the space, stomping their feet to the beat.
Change Direction: Occasionally call out "Change direction!" to have pairs change marching direction.
Follow the Leader: Choose a child to be the leader and have other pairs follow their movements (hopping, skipping, side-shuffling).

4. Group Stomp (5 minutes):
Play energetic music with a strong beat.
Stomping Fun: Instruct children to stand in a circle with arms raised high.
Stomp the Beat: Stomp their feet together on the strong beats of the music.
Variations: Clap hands overhead on off-beats, jump in place or add simple arm movements like punches or circles.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Play calming music.
Gentle Stretches: Guide children through simple stretches like arm circles, reaching for toes, and gentle bounces.
Group Relaxation: Have children sit or lie down comfortably and take slow, deep breaths.

Remember:
This lesson plan is designed to foster a love of movement and rhythm in young children. By creating a positive and inclusive environment, you'll help them develop their foundational motor skills and have a blast in the process!

Variations

Themed Dance: Choose a theme like animals, seasons, or occupations, and have children move accordingly.
Freeze Frame Stories: Play music and have children freeze in creative poses. Tell a story based on the poses.
Mirror Me: Divide the class into leader and follower groups. Leaders make up simple movements and followers mirror them.
