Activity
Develop locomotor skills like walking, running, skipping, and jumping.
Improve coordination and following directions.
Encourage creativity and imagination through animal movements.
Foster teamwork and social interaction.
This fun and engaging activity gets children moving their bodies and practicing locomotor skills while following the leader and pretending to be different animals.
Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music (optional) and encourage children to move freely with light jumping jacks, arm circles, leg swings, and animal walks (pretending to be animals that walk, run, or hop).
Animal Train (15-20 minutes):
Choose a Leader: Select a child (or the teacher) to be the leader of the animal train.
Pick an Animal: The leader chooses an animal and demonstrates its movement (e.g., walking like an elephant, running like a cheetah, hopping like a bunny).
From the Train: All the children line up behind the leader, holding onto the waist or shoulders of the person in front of them to create a train.
Follow the Leader: The leader starts moving around the space, using the chosen animal's movement. The rest of the children follow close behind, mimicking the leader's movements and staying connected in the train.
Change Leaders & Animals: After a few minutes, choose a new leader from the train. The new leader picks a different animal and demonstrates its movement, leading the train in a new way.
Repeat: Continue playing for 15-20 minutes, allowing different children to be leaders and choose various animal movements.
Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Play calming music (optional) and encourage children to walk around freely or do gentle stretches.
Remember:
This activity is all about having fun and getting children to move their bodies in different ways. Focus on creating a positive and inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable participating and exploring their creativity.
Themed Trains: Choose a theme for the animal train, like animals from a specific region (African safari, jungle animals) or farm animals.
Obstacle Course: Set up a simple obstacle course and have the animal train navigate it using the chosen animal movements.
Freeze Dance: Occasionally, pause the music and have everyone in the train freeze in their animal pose. When the music resumes, they continue following the leader.
Start with simple locomotor skills like walking and running, then progress to skipping and jumping as children get comfortable.
Use clear and concise instructions for the animal movements.
Encourage creativity and allow children to come up with their own animal movements (caterpillar crawl, crab walk, etc.).
Ensure children hold onto each other safely while forming the train to avoid falls.
Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate participation and effort.
Open space large enough for children to move comfortably
Music player (optional)
