Sole Mates - Mastering Turns with the Sole of Your Foot!

Learning Outcomes

Develop close ball control using the sole.
Practice sharp turns with the sole for quick changes of direction.
Enhance agility and balance while dribbling.

Description Of Activity

This lesson plan focuses on developing a key dribbling skill: using the sole for tight turns while maintaining control of the ball. Through fun drills and progressions, players will master this technique, improving their agility and dribbling skills.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
A light jog or jumping jacks to get the blood flowing.
High knees and butt kicks with a focus on stopping and starting quickly.
Ankle circles (forward and backward) to loosen up the joints.
Dribble with both feet for a short distance to get used to the ball.

Station 1: Sole Stops & Starts (10 minutes):
Explanation: Explain that the sole can be used as a "stopper" to control the ball.
Practice: Players dribble the ball at a moderate pace. Encourage them to use the sole of their dominant foot to stop the ball momentarily (without picking it up). Then, they push the ball forward with the same foot and continue dribbling. Repeat with the other foot.

Station 2: Sole Turns (10 minutes):
Set-Up: Place cones a few feet apart in a straight line.
Demonstration: Demonstrate a sharp turn using the sole of the foot. Emphasize:
Stopping the ball with the sole of one foot.
Placing the other foot next to the ball (slightly angled out).
Quickly pushing the ball with the sole of the first foot in the desired direction to turn.
Practice: Players dribble towards the cones and practice the sole turn technique, changing direction around each cone. Encourage them to focus on using the sole for control and keeping the turn tight.

Station 3: Sole Dribbling Challenge (5 minutes):
Set Up: Set up a small dribbling course with cones marking a path with turns and changes of direction.
Challenge: Players dribble the course, focusing on using the soles of their feet for close control and sharp turns around the cones. Time each player to see who can complete the course the fastest while maintaining control of the ball.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Light walking or gentle stretches to cool down and prevent injury.

Remember:
This lesson plan provides a framework for developing close control dribbling with the sole of the foot. By incorporating fun drills, positive reinforcement, and gradual progression, your players will be well on their way to mastering this valuable skill and becoming more agile and confident footballers.

Variations

Younger players: Use a larger ball or softer tennis ball for easier control. Increase the distance between cones as their skills develop.
Older players: Introduce variations like double turns (using the sole twice for a quick change of direction) or incorporating the sole turn with other dribbling moves.
Team Challenge: Divide players into teams and have them race each other through the dribbling course using sole turns.

Coaching Tips

Focus on control: Emphasize using the sole to control the ball, not just stop it completely.
Small steps & quick touches: Encourage players to take small steps and quick touches with the ball for better agility during turns.
Practice with both feet: Encourage players to practice turns with both their dominant and non-dominant foot.
Start slow and progress: Begin with slow dribbling and gradual turns, then increase speed and tightness as skills improve.
Offer positive reinforcement: Celebrate each player's progress, no matter their skill level.

Equipment/Material Required
