Pass & Move

Learning Outcomes

Develop awareness of space and teammates while passing the ball.
Improve passing accuracy and control.
Enhance movement and anticipation skills for receiving passes.
Promote teamwork and communication on the field.

Description Of Activity

This lesson plan focuses on the crucial skill of combining passing with movement in football (soccer). Through fun drills and progressions, players will learn to pass the ball accurately while moving into open space and anticipating receiving passes from teammates.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
A light jog or jumping jacks to get the blood flowing.
High knees and butt kicks with a focus on stopping and starting quickly.
Arm circles forward and backward to loosen up shoulders.
Dribble with both feet for a short distance to get used to the ball.

Station 1: Pass & Follow (10 minutes):
Set Up: Players stand in pairs, a few feet apart.
Explanation: Explain the importance of following your pass to create space and receive a return pass.
Practice: One player passes the ball to their partner and then immediately jogs forward into open space. The partner receives the ball, controls it, and then passes it back to the first player who has moved forward. Repeat, switching roles after a few passes. Encourage players to focus on passing accuracy and following their pass with good movement.

Station 2: Diamond Drill (10 minutes):
Set Up: Create a diamond shape with cones, with players positioned at each point.
Passing Pattern: One player starts by passing the ball to the player diagonally across the diamond. The receiver controls the ball, then passes to the next player in the diamond, and so on. Players should move towards the ball as they receive the pass and then move away to create space for the next pass. Emphasize quick passing and anticipation of the next pass.

Station 3: Mini-Scrimmage with Focus on Pass & Move (5 minutes):
Set Up: Organize a small scrimmage with a limited number of players (e.g., 3v3 or 4v4) on a smaller field.
Focus on Passing & Moving: Encourage players to prioritize passing the ball and moving into open space to create scoring opportunities. Players should practice following their passes and anticipating passes from teammates.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Light walking or gentle stretches to cool down and prevent injury.

Remember:
This lesson plan provides a framework for developing the essential skill of combining passing with movement in football. By incorporating fun drills, positive reinforcement, and gradual progression, your players will be well on their way to becoming more confident and well-rounded footballers.

Variations

Younger Players: Use a larger ball or softer tennis ball for easier control. Start with stationary passing and gradually incorporate movement.
Older Players: Introduce variations like one-touch passing, disguise passes (feints), or passing with different speeds and directions.
Competition: Divide players into teams and have them compete in small scrimmages with points awarded for successful passing and movement.

Coaching Tips

Focus on communication: Encourage players to call for the ball and communicate with teammates.
Control and accuracy: Emphasize passing the ball with control and accuracy to allow for good reception and further passing.
Head up while moving: Encourage players to keep their head up while moving to maintain awareness of teammates and open space.
First touch: Remind players to control the ball with their first touch after receiving a pass to set themselves up for the next move.
Positive reinforcement: Celebrate successful passes, good movement, and teamwork.
