Fun with Bubbles! (Breathing Control Introduction)

Learning Outcomes

Become comfortable putting their face in the water.
Practice exhaling bubbles underwater.
Begin to understand the concept of breath control.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (5 minutes):
Sing songs and play games by the pool to get children comfortable and excited. Splash gently, walk around the shallow end, and have them blow bubbles on land.

Face in the Water (5 minutes):
Ask children to sit at the edge, legs dangling in the water.
Encourage them to lean forward and gently dip their face in, blowing bubbles on the water's surface.
Use positive reinforcement for every attempt!

Bubble Blowing (10 minutes):
Introduce pool noodles or kickboards for children to hold onto while standing in shallow water.
Demonstrate how to take a deep breath through their nose and then blow bubbles out underwater.
Encourage them to count their bubbles (start with small goals like 1 or 2).
Play a game! Time each other to see who can blow the most bubbles without coming up for air (keep it short and focus on fun, not competition).

Cool-down (5 minutes):
Read a book about bubbles or sing a calming song.
Enjoy a healthy snack together.

Variations

For younger children: Use watering cans to gently pour water on their faces instead of directly dipping in.
For older children: Introduce blowing rings underwater once they are comfortable with blowing bubbles.
For a group activity: Play a "bubble race" where children race to blow the most bubbles in a designated time frame (adult supervision required).

Coaching Tips

Be patient and encouraging. This is a new skill, and it may take time for children to feel comfortable.
Use positive reinforcement and praise every effort, no matter how big or small.
Focus on fun! Bubbles are a great way to introduce breath control without feeling pressured.
Demonstrate the activity yourself and let them see how much fun it can be.
Let them set the pace. If they are hesitant, take a break or revisit face-dipping before progressing.
Always maintain a 1:1 adult-to-child ratio for safety.

Equipment/Material Required

Pool noodles or kickboards (optional)
Watering cans (optional)
Fun pool toys (distraction for younger children)
Remember: This lesson is all about creating a positive association with putting their face in the water and building the foundation for future breath control techniques. Keep it fun, keep it short, and celebrate every success!
