Activity
Introduce the concept of roller skates.
Develop balance and coordination skills.
Foster a sense of fun and enjoyment on wheels (imaginary skates in this case).
Warm-up (5 minutes):
Play some fun music and have children move around freely. Encourage jumping, hopping, and skipping to get their bodies loose.
March of the Mini-Me's (5 minutes):
Introduce the concept of skates by pretending to put on imaginary skates.
Have children march around the space, holding their arms out to the side for balance (like penguin wings).
Sing a marching song or play marching music to add to the fun.
Penguin Wobble (10 minutes):
Explain that penguins waddle because their feet are far apart.
Instruct children to waddle around the space, taking small steps and keeping their feet wide apart (like a penguin).
Encourage them to wiggle their bellies as they waddle.
One Foot, Two Foot (5 minutes):
Have children stand on one foot, then switch to the other foot, focusing on balance.
Play a game! Time them to see how long they can balance on each foot (keep it short and lighthearted).
Glide and Stop (5 minutes):
Pretend to glide on imaginary skates by holding a squatting position with arms outstretched for balance.
Instruct them to slowly "glide" forward a few steps.
To stop, have them pretend to press down on their imaginary heels to slow down and come to a complete stop.
Cool-down (5 minutes):
Play a calming song and have children stretch their arms and legs gently.
Discuss how much fun they had pretending to be penguins on skates!
Remember: This lesson is all about introducing the concept of skates in a fun and engaging way. It helps them develop foundational balance and coordination skills that will prepare them for future skating experiences.
For a more energetic group: Play a freeze game! Have them "waddle" around while music plays, then freeze like a penguin when the music stops.
For a quieter group: Sing songs about animals that walk in different ways (like elephants or monkeys) and have them imitate the movements.
Equipment: None required (focuses on imagination and movement).
Keep it fun and lighthearted! Pre-Nursery and UKG children have short attention spans, so focus on short activities with plenty of movement and silliness.
Use positive reinforcement and praise every effort, no matter how small.
Demonstrate the activities yourself and encourage them to copy you.
Be patient and understanding. Learning balance takes time and practice.
Ensure a safe environment with plenty of open space for them to move around freely.
