Become a Skate Star! (Field Skating Fundamentals)

Learning Outcomes

Introduce basic field skating concepts.
Develop balance and coordination on one foot.
Practice gliding and stopping techniques (without skates).

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music and do jumping jacks, high knees, and arm circles to get the blood flowing and loosen up.

Stance & Balance (10 minutes):
Discuss proper skating posture: knees slightly bent, core engaged, and back straight.
Practice standing on one foot for increasing lengths of time. Play a game of "Statue" where they hold a pose on one foot for a set time (gradually increase the duration).
Introduce the concept of "pointing" their toes on the non-standing foot for better balance (similar to how skates force toe alignment).

Gliding & Stopping (15 minutes):
Have students pretend to put on imaginary skates.
Instruct them to practice gliding by taking small, controlled steps with one foot in front of the other, mimicking the skating motion.
Introduce "stopping techniques" without skates:
T-Stop: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, then extend one foot outwards like a "T" to slow down and stop.
Heel Stop: Extend one leg back with the heel pointed down to slow down and stop.
Play a game of "Scoot Freeze" where they glide around the space and freeze when the instructor calls out "stop!" (encourages practicing both gliding and stopping techniques).

Obstacle Course (10 minutes):
Set up an obstacle course using cones or other markers. Students navigate the course by gliding and stopping around the obstacles (emphasizes control and coordination).

Cool-down (5 minutes):
Stretch major muscle groups, focusing on ankles, knees, and hamstrings.
Discuss the importance of balance and coordination for skating.

Remember:
This lesson is a fun introduction to field skating fundamentals. It helps build confidence and prepares them for the transition to actual skates later on.

Variations

For a more advanced group: Introduce one-legged glides with longer distances. Time them to see who can glide the farthest on one foot.
For a more playful group: Play a game of "Tag" where students "skate" around and tag each other by tapping their imaginary skates.

Coaching Tips

Focus on proper form and technique over speed or distance.
Break down skills into smaller steps and provide clear instructions.
Encourage students to help and support each other.
Use positive reinforcement and celebrate successes, no matter how small.
Be patient, as learning balance and coordination takes practice.

Equipment/Material Required
