Skating Obstacle Course

Learning Outcomes

Practice and refine gliding, stopping, and turning techniques within an obstacle course setting.
Develop agility, coordination, and problem-solving skills while navigating the course.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (5-10 minutes):
Light cardio exercises and dynamic stretches (jumping jacks, arm circles, lunges) to get the blood flowing and muscles warm.

Set Up the Course (10 minutes):
Use cones, markers, or other safe objects to create a designated skating area.
Design the course with a variety of elements that challenge different skills:
Straight sections: Practice gliding and maintaining speed.
Zig-zag sections: Practice maneuvering and quick turns.
Circles: Practice controlled turns and maintaining balance.
Narrow sections: Focus on precision and maintaining balance in a confined space.
Stopping zones (marked with a specific color cone or designated area): Practice stopping techniques (T-Stops, Heel Stops) at designated points.

Course Practice (10-15 minutes):
Students walk the course first to understand the layout and identify challenges.
Start with slow, controlled gliding through the course, focusing on the proper technique for each element.
Gradually increase speed as confidence and skill level improve.
Emphasize proper stopping techniques at designated zones, ensuring a complete stop before proceeding.

Challenge Time (Optional, 5 minutes):
Introduce a timed element for more advanced students. Time them as they complete the course, encouraging them to maintain proper technique while achieving a faster time.
Alternatively, play a team relay race where students complete the course and tag their teammates.

Cool-down (5-10 minutes):

Gentle stretches focusing on ankles, knees, and core, followed by a review of key learning points and a discussion about their experience with the obstacle course.

Variations

Theme the course! Create a "Jungle Adventure" course with winding paths and "narrow bridges" (cones close together) or a "Space Exploration" course with planets (cones) to navigate around.
Incorporate objects to pick up or retrieve at designated points in the course, adding an extra challenge.
Play "Simon Says" while navigating the course. Simon instructs specific actions (e.g., "Glide fast!", "Hop turn!", "T-Stop!") as they navigate the course.

Coaching Tips

Break down the course into smaller sections and focus on specific skills in each area.
Provide clear instructions and demonstrations for navigating different course elements.
Offer encouragement and positive feedback as they progress through the course.
Emphasize safety and remind them to maintain control and avoid collisions.
Adapt the difficulty of the course based on the students' skill level.

Equipment/Material Required
