Activity
Introduce basic turning techniques and practice maneuvering with control.
Warm-up (5-10 minutes):
Light cardio exercises and dynamic stretches (jumping jacks, arm circles, lunges) to get the blood flowing and the muscles warm.
Scissor Turn Introduction and Practice (10 minutes):
Demonstrate the Technique: Show students the Scissor Turn motion: bend knees slightly and mimic a skating push-off, bringing one foot close to the other leg (like scissors) while shifting weight onto the turning foot (the foot that will be in front after the turn). Emphasize a slight forward lean for better balance and turn initiation.
Stationary Practice: Have students practice the Scissor Turn motion without actually moving. They can hold onto a railing for support if needed. Focus on the weight shift and body rotation during the scissor motion.
Slow Glide with Scissor Turns: Students practice gliding slowly with a partner or holding onto a railing. As they glide, instruct them to initiate the Scissor Turn to change direction, making small turns initially. Gradually increase the angle of the turn as their confidence grows.
Hop Turn Introduction and Practice (10 minutes):
Introduce the Technique: Demonstrate the Hop Turn: Hop on one foot, quickly switch weight to the other foot while turning the body 180 degrees, and land with a slight bend in the knees. Remind them to keep their core engaged for stability during the hop and landing.
Progression Practice: Break down the Hop Turn into smaller steps:
Practice single-leg hops: Encourage them to hop on each leg for a few seconds, focusing on balance and knee bend.
Practice body rotation: Have them stand on one leg and practice rotating their upper body 180 degrees while maintaining balance.
Combine Hop and Turn: Once comfortable, instruct them to combine a hop on one leg with a 180-degree body rotation, aiming to land on the other foot.
Slow Glide with Hop Turns: Students practice gliding slowly and attempt the Hop Turn to change direction by 180 degrees. Encourage them to focus on a smooth transition between the hop and landing, and maintaining balance on the landing foot.
Cool-down (5-10 minutes):
Gentle stretches focusing on ankles, knees, and core, followed by a review of key learning points. Ask students to share their experiences with each turning technique and discuss which one they found easier.
Important Note:
Emphasize safety throughout the activity. Encourage students to practice turns at slower speeds before gradually increasing the difficulty.
Break down the Hop Turn into smaller steps to build confidence and proper technique before attempting the full turn.
Provide positive reinforcement and celebrate their progress in mastering these turning techniques.
"Follow the Leader" Game: Divide students into groups. The leader skates around the designated area, incorporating different turns and maneuvers (Scissor Turns, Hop Turns, weaving around cones). Group members follow the leader, practicing the various turns and maintaining control. Leaders can switch periodically.
"Skating Maze" Challenge: Set up cones in a maze-like pattern, with varying distances between them. Students navigate the maze, practicing Scissor Turns and Hop Turns to maneuver around the cones and complete the course. Time them for an additional challenge.
"Tag with Turns" Game: Play a game of tag, but students can only tag each other by skating past them while performing a turn (Scissor Turn or Hop Turn). This encourages them to practice turns while maintaining speed and agility.
