Activity
Become comfortable in the water environment.
Develop basic water confidence.
Warm-Up (2-3 minutes):
While still on the pool deck, have children participate in some gentle exercises like:
Jumping Jacks: Encourage a fun variation like "jumping frogs" or "swimming fishes."
Arm Circles: Sing a song about making circles with arms, like "If You're Happy and You Know It."
Leg Swings: Pretend to be a "happy penguin" swinging its legs.
Activity (10-15 minutes):
Entering the Water: With a parent/guardian or instructor by their side, have children slowly enter the shallow end of the pool. Encourage them to hold onto the ledge and dip their toes, then gradually their legs, into the water.
Exploration Time! Let playtime begin! Here are some fun activities to introduce:
Blowing Bubbles: Provide small, safe bubble blowers and demonstrate how to blow bubbles in the water.
Splashing Fun: Let them splash with their hands and feet, creating a small "water fountain."
Kick & Slide: While holding onto the wall, encourage them to kick their legs and slide along the ledge.
Water Toys: Introduce the basket of water toys! Let them explore squirting water with safe bottles, holding onto floating rings, or kicking a kickboard.
Collecting Water: Give them a waterproof bucket to scoop up water and pour it on themselves or their toys.
Safety:
Ensure a qualified lifeguard or instructor is present at all times.
Maintain a 1:1 adult-to-child ratio in the water.
Only allow children in the shallow end where they can stand comfortably.
Remember:
This is just a framework. Adapt the activities and the duration based on the children's individual needs and comfort levels. The most important thing is to create a fun and positive experience that builds their confidence and love for water.
Sing & Splash: Sing songs about water animals while splashing their hands and feet. For example, "Baby Shark" or "Five Little Ducks."
Parent Participation: Encourage parents/guardians to actively participate in the water with their children. They can hold hands, create a "boat" with their arms for children to sit on, or play chase games gently.
Water Obstacle Course: Set up a simple obstacle course in the shallow end using pool noodles or cones. Children can navigate the course while holding onto the wall or with their parent's assistance.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate every step of their progress, no matter how small. Use cheers, high-fives, and enthusiastic praise to keep them motivated.
Focus on Fun: Keep the atmosphere light and playful. Sing songs, tell stories, and make silly noises related to water activities.
Gentle Guidance: Avoid forcing any child into activities they are not comfortable with. Let them explore at their own pace and offer gentle encouragement.
Safety First: Always prioritize safety. If a child becomes scared or overwhelmed, take them out of the water immediately and comfort them.
