Building a Wall - Mastering Man-to-Man Defense

Learning Outcomes

Players will understand the fundamental principles of man-to-man defense: staying low, balanced footwork, and maintaining proper defensive position.
Players will be able to effectively guard their opponent, limiting their ability to drive and pass.
Players will practice communication and teamwork on defense.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (10 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Dynamic stretches (arm circles, torso twists, lunges) (3 minutes)
High knees, butt kicks, jumping jacks (2 minutes)
Partnered dribbling drills (1-on-1, switching hands) (3 minutes)

Activity Description:
Shell Drill (5 minutes):
Divide players into pairs, one on offense and one on defense. The defender starts in a low defensive stance with their hands up, guarding imaginary space in front of them (the "shell"). The offensive player tries to move around the defender but cannot break through the shell. The defender shuffles their feet to stay between the offensive player and the basket. Encourage communication ("ball, ball, ball") when the offensive player fakes or drives.

Mirror Drill (5 minutes):
Pairs line up facing each other. One player is the mirror, mimicking the movements of their partner. The defender practices staying low, moving laterally, and maintaining a proper defensive stance. The offensive player practices basic dribble moves and changes of direction. After a set time, switch roles.

1-on-1 Defense (15 minutes):
Players guard each other full-court. The offensive player practices basic scoring moves (dribble drives, jump shots) while the defender focuses on:
Staying low: Bends knees, keeps center of gravity low to react quickly.
Balanced footwork: Slides and shuffles laterally to stay in front of the offensive player. Don't cross your feet!
Hand Positioning: Hands up with palms facing outward to contest shots and deflect passes.
Staying Between Player and Basket: Force the offensive player towards the baseline and outside the paint.
3-on-3 Scrimmage with focus on Man-to-Man Defense (10 minutes): Divide players into teams and play a scrimmage with an emphasis on applying the learned defensive principles. Encourage communication and switching on screens.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Static stretches (hamstring stretches, quad stretches, arm raises) (3 minutes)

Variations

Cone Drill: Set up cones in a square pattern. Players shuffle laterally around the cones, practicing change of direction and maintaining defensive stance.
Double Teaming: Introduce double-teaming drills with one defender pressuring the ball handler and the other defender providing help defense.
Help and Recover: Practice help defense scenarios where one defender leaves their player to help on a drive and then recovers back to their original assignment.

Coaching Tips

Emphasize the importance of hustle and communication.
Focus on proper footwork and staying low throughout the drills.
Encourage positive reinforcement and celebrate defensive stops.
Tailor the complexity of drills based on player skill level.

Equipment/Material Required
