Activity
Players will understand the concept of zone defense and their assigned zone areas.
Players will be able to communicate effectively on defense, calling out screens and rotations.
Players will practice proper footwork, staying low, and contesting shots within their zone.
Warm-up (10 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Dynamic stretches (arm circles, torso twists, lunges) (3 minutes)
High knees, butt kicks, jumping jacks (2 minutes)
Partnered passing drills (chest passes, bounce passes) (3 minutes)
Activity Description:
Zone Breakdown (5 minutes): Explain the chosen zone defense (e.g., 2-3 zone). Use diagrams or cones to mark the zones on the court. Demonstrate and explain each player's responsibilities within their zone: guarding their area, denying entry, and rotating on ball movement.
Zone Shell Drill (5 minutes): Divide players into groups of 5. Players stand in their assigned zone positions. One player acts as the offensive player, dribbling around the perimeter. Defenders stay low in their zone, shuffling laterally and keeping their hands up to contest potential shots. Encourage communication ("ball, ball, ball") as the ball moves.
Passing Drills in the Zone (5 minutes): Maintain zone positions. One coach or player acts as the passer, simulating offensive ball movement around the perimeter. Defenders focus on communication (switching, help) and rotating within their zone to deny open passes.
Zone vs. 1-on-1 (10 minutes): Divide players into offense and defense. The offense starts outside the zone with one player. The defense stays in their zone positions. The offensive player tries to dribble into an open area and score. Defenders focus on contesting shots within their zone and rotating to help teammates when necessary. After a shot attempt or turnover, switch offense and defense.
Zone vs. 2-on-1 (10 minutes): Increase offensive pressure. Two offensive players start against the zone defense. The defense continues to communicate and rotate, focusing on denying open shots and layups. Encourage double-teaming the ball handler and recovering back to their zone assignments.
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Static stretches (hamstring stretches, quad stretches, arm raises) (3 minutes)
Zone vs. Cutting: Introduce a player cutting through the zone without the ball. Defenders practice recognizing cuts and recovering to their assigned areas.
Zone Trap: Introduce a zone trap where defenders double-team the ball handler at the top of the key and then rotate to cover open shooters.
Remember: This lesson plan provides a basic framework. Feel free to adjust the drills and activities to fit your specific needs and the age/skill level of your players.
Emphasize the importance of communication and calling out screens and rotations.
Focus on staying low in the defensive stance and shuffling laterally within the zone.
Encourage active hands to contest shots and deflect passes.
Start with simpler drills and gradually increase offensive pressure as players gain understanding.
