Mastering the Full-Court Press

Learning Outcomes

Players will understand the principles of a full-court press: pressuring the inbounds pass, denying ball movement, and forcing turnovers.
Players will be able to effectively communicate and work together to trap the opposing team in the backcourt.
Players will improve their conditioning and develop the stamina needed for a full-court press.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (10 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Dynamic stretches (arm circles, torso twists, lunges) (3 minutes)
High knees, butt kicks, jumping jacks (2 minutes)
Partnered defensive slides (mirror drill) (3 minutes)

Activity Description:
Press Breakdown (5 minutes):  Introduce the chosen full-court press (e.g., man-to-man press, zone press). Explain each player's responsibility and communication calls ("trap," "switch"). Emphasize staying low, active hands, and hustling after loose balls.

Half-Court Press Drill (5 minutes): Divide players into offense and defense (3 defenders vs. 3 offenders).  Offense starts at the sideline near their basket.  Defense lines up in their press positions according to the chosen press style.  The offense attempts to inbound the ball and advance it up the court while the defense pressures the ball handler and denies passing lanes.  Play for a set time, then switch offense and defense.

Full-Court Press Shell Drill (5 minutes):  Simulate the full-court press without a live ball. Defenders sprint to their assigned positions on the court according to the press scheme.  Practice proper positioning, communication calls, and maintaining defensive intensity throughout the drill.

Full-Court Press vs. Walk-Through Offense (10 minutes):  The offense walks through their inbound play and attempts to break the press with set plays or basic passing drills.  Defense practices applying pressure, trapping the ball handler, and rotating to cover open players.  Encourage communication and quick decision-making.

Full-Court Press Scrimmage (10 minutes):  Play a live scrimmage with the full-court press implemented.  Start with shorter bursts (30 seconds) to manage player stamina and gradually increase duration as fitness improves.  Focus on applying learned techniques and effective communication.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Static stretches (hamstring stretches, quad stretches, arm raises) (3 minutes)

Variations

Man-to-Man vs. Zone Press: Introduce both styles of press and have players practice switching between them based on the game situation.
Press Breaker Drills: Teach the offensive team basic press breaker plays to counter the defense's pressure.
Trapping Drills: Focus on specific trapping techniques, like double-teaming the ball handler or trapping along the sideline.

Coaching Tips

Emphasize the importance of conditioning and maintaining high energy throughout the press.
Communication is key - use short, clear calls to ensure everyone is on the same page.
Focus on pressuring the ball handler and denying easy passes.
Be prepared to adjust the press based on the opponent's offensive strategy.
Start slow and gradually increase the intensity and complexity of the drills.
