Activity
Players will understand the concept of matchup zone defense, combining elements of man-to-man and zone defense.
Players will be able to effectively guard their assigned player while maintaining zone positioning.
Players will improve communication and teamwork on defense, emphasizing rotations and help defense.
Warm-up (10 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Dynamic stretches (arm circles, torso twists, lunges) (3 minutes)
High knees, butt kicks, jumping jacks (2 minutes)
Partnered defensive slides (mirror drill) (3 minutes)
Activity Description:
Matchup Zone Breakdown (5 minutes): Introduce the matchup zone concept (e.g., 2-3 matchup). Explain player assignments: guarding their matchup tightly initially, then transitioning into zone responsibility as the ball moves. Utilize diagrams or cones to mark zone areas.
Matchup Shell Drill (5 minutes): Divide players into groups of 5. Players stand in their assigned matchup zone positions. One player acts as the offensive player, dribbling around the perimeter. Defenders stay low in their stance, shuffling laterally and contesting potential shots. Encourage communication ("ball, ball, ball") as the ball moves. When the offensive player drives, the defender guarding them "matches up" tightly, then recovers to their zone position as the ball moves away.
Zone Rotation Drill (5 minutes): Maintain zone positions with one coach or player acting as the passer, simulating offensive ball movement. Defenders focus on communication (switching, help) and rotating within their zone to deny open passes. When the pass goes to a specific zone, the defender guarding that area steps out to contest the shot, with teammates rotating to cover vacated space.
Matchup vs. 1-on-1 (10 minutes): Divide players into offense and defense (similar to zone vs 1-on-1 drill). The offense starts outside with one player. The defense stays in their matchup zone positions. The offensive player tries to dribble into an open area and score. Defenders focus on "matching up" initially, then transitioning to zone defense with rotations and help defense. After a shot attempt or turnover, switch offense and defense.
Matchup vs. 2-on-1 (10 minutes): Increase offensive pressure with two offensive players against the matchup zone. Defense continues to communicate and rotate, focusing on "matching up" initially and then transitioning to zone principles with help defense and covering open shooters.
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Static stretches (hamstring stretches, quad stretches, arm raises) (3 minutes)
Matchup Zone with Traps: Introduce basic trapping techniques within the matchup zone, like double-teaming the ball handler in specific situations.
Matchup vs. Cutting: Introduce a player cutting through the zone without the ball. Defenders practice recognizing cuts, "matching up" initially, then recovering to their zone assignments.
Emphasize the importance of communication, calling out screens, switches, and rotations.
Balance "matching up" tightly with maintaining zone positioning and responsibility.
Encourage active hands to contest shots and deflect passes in both matchup and zone situations.
Start with simpler drills and gradually increase offensive pressure as players gain understanding.
Basketballs, Cones (optional)
