Activity
Players will understand the concept of switching defense and when to switch on screens.
Players will be able to effectively communicate switches and maintain defensive positioning after a switch.
Players will improve their footwork and agility to stay with their assigned player after a switch.
Warm-up (10 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Dynamic stretches (arm circles, torso twists, lunges) (3 minutes)
High knees, butt kicks, jumping jacks (2 minutes)
Partnered defensive slides (mirror drill) (3 minutes)
Activity Description:
Switching Breakdown (5 minutes): Explain the concept of switching defense and when it's appropriate to switch on screens (ball screens, off-ball screens). Emphasize the importance of communication ("switch," "hedge") and calling out screens for teammates.
Cone Drill (5 minutes): Set up cones in pairs at various locations on the court. Players line up on one side. On coach's call, players sprint laterally around the cones, simulating switching on screens. Encourage quick changes of direction and maintain a low defensive stance.
Partner Switching Drill (5 minutes): Divide players into pairs. One player acts as the ball handler, dribbling around the designated defender. The other player practices calling out screens ("ball screen!") and switching defenders while maintaining proper defensive positioning. After a set time, switch roles.
3-on-3 Switching Defense (15 minutes): Play 3-on-3 with an emphasis on switching on screens. Encourage offensive players to set screens to test the defense's communication and switching ability. Defenders focus on calling out screens, switching smoothly, and staying with their assigned player after the switch.
Full-Court Scrimmage with Switching Defense (10 minutes): Play a live scrimmage where defenders switch on all screens. Start with a designated screener on offense to highlight switching situations. Gradually allow for more freedom in screen placement as players gain confidence.
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Static stretches (hamstring stretches, quad stretches, arm raises) (3 minutes)
Hedge Drill: Introduce "hedging" on ball screens, where the defender briefly slows the ball handler before recovering to their original assignment.
Mismatches: Practice switching scenarios that create mismatches (guard on center, etc.) and emphasize help defense strategies.
Zone with Switching: Combine zone defense principles with switching on specific screens.
Emphasize clear communication - call out screens early and loudly.
Focus on footwork and staying low after a switch to maintain defensive pressure.
Don't fight through screens - recover quickly to your new assignment.
Start with simple switching drills and gradually increase complexity as players improve.
Be patient - mastering switching defense takes practice and coordination.
