Activity
Understand the concept of the universal grip in badminton.
Develop a comfortable and secure grip on the badminton racket.
Improve control and power in your badminton strokes.
Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light Cardio: Begin with a light jog around the court for 2 minutes to get your blood flowing and muscles warm.
Arm Circles: Perform 10 forward and 10 backward arm circles on each shoulder to loosen up your upper body.
Jumping Jacks: Do 20 jacks to increase heart rate and improve agility.
Activity Description (15 minutes):
Grip Exploration: Ask players to hold the racket loosely in their non-dominant hand, with the handle resting diagonally across their palm.
Thumb Placement: With their dominant hand, players extend their fingers naturally around the handle. The thumb should rest comfortably on the bevel (the flat edge) on one side of the grip. This is not a strict position; some prefer it slightly more towards the center or edge.
Grip Check: Players gently close their fingers around the handle without squeezing too tightly once the thumb is positioned. A slight gap between the thumb and index finger is normal.
Practice Swings: Encourage players to hold the racket out in front of them and practice swinging it back and forth to get a feel for the grip.
Partner Feedback: Players can pair up and hold the racket for each other, checking for tightness and overall comfort in the grip.
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Static Stretches: Perform gentle stretches focusing on the shoulders, arms, and wrists used in badminton strokes.
Arm Swings: Do slow, controlled arm swings forward and backward to relax your upper body.
Mirror Exercise: Players can stand in front of a mirror to ensure their grip looks balanced and comfortable.
Blind Grip: Ask players to close their eyes and find the universal grip without looking. This helps develop muscle memory.
Grip Tape Adjustment: If some players find the grip too thin or thick, suggest using grip tape to adjust the thickness for their preference.
Comfort is Key: The grip should feel comfortable and allow for easy wrist movement. Avoid gripping too tightly.
Fingertip Control: Emphasize using the pads of your fingers, not just your palm, to control the racket for better stroke execution.
Versatility: The universal grip allows for transitioning between forehand and backhand strokes smoothly.
Practice Makes Perfect: Encourage players to practice the grip with swings and shadow strokes before hitting the shuttlecock.
