Activity
Understand the importance of lunges for badminton footwork.
Master the proper lunge technique for powerful badminton movement.
Improve agility and explosiveness when reaching shots.
Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light Cardio: Start with a light jog around the court for 2 minutes to get your blood flowing and muscles loose.
Arm Circles: Perform 10 forward and 10 backward arm circles on each arm to loosen up your shoulders.
Dynamic Stretches: Perform dynamic stretches like lunges with arm swings and leg swings to prepare your body for quick movements.
Activity Description (15 minutes):
Footwork Focus: Explain the importance of lunges for reaching shots quickly and effectively in badminton. Demonstrate a proper lunge with a focus on:
Stance: Start with feet shoulder-width apart and core engaged.
Lunge Step: Take a big step forward with one leg, lowering your hips towards the ground.
Front Leg: Bend your front knee at a 90-degree angle, keeping your heel flat on the ground.
Back Leg: Keep your back leg straight or slightly bent, with the heel slightly lifted.
Upper Body: Keep your upper body upright and core engaged for stability.
Push Off: Push off your front foot to return to the starting position.
Practice Makes Perfect: Have players practice lunges individually, focusing on proper technique and maintaining balance.
Shadow Play: Once comfortable with lunges, players can practice lunges with a badminton racket while shadowing forehand and backhand strokes, simulating reaching for shots.
Partner Up: Divide players into pairs. One player stands with a shuttlecock in hand, while the other practices lunges toward them. The player with the shuttlecock pretends to hit shots in different directions, prompting the other player to lunge in the corresponding direction to "reach" the shot.
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Static Stretches: Perform static stretches that focus on major muscle groups used during lunges, such as quads, hamstrings, and calves.
Light Walk: Slow walk around the court for 2 minutes to cool down.
Increase Difficulty: Once comfortable with basic lunges, introduce jumping lunges where players jump and switch legs in the lunge position.
Shuttlecock Retrieval: Scatter shuttlecocks around the court. Players practice lunges to retrieve them while maintaining proper technique.
Incorporate Net Play: Include lunges while practicing net shots, simulating quick movements at the net.
Focus on Form: Ensure players focus on proper lunge technique for maximum power and to avoid injuries.
Keep Your Core Engaged: A strong core helps maintain balance and stability during lunges.
Push Off Explosively: Encourage players to push off with their front foot to generate power for quicker movement.
React to the Shot (Partner Drill): In the partner drill, emphasize reacting to the direction of the "shot" and not anticipating it.
Badminton rackets (one per player)
Shuttlecocks (enough for variations)
