Clear Shot

Learning Outcomes

Understand the purpose and technique of the clear shot in badminton.
Perform a clear shot with proper form and control.
Develop the ability to clear the shuttlecock to the back of the opponent's court.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (5 minutes):
Light Cardio: Get your heart rate up with a light jog around the court for 2 minutes.
Arm Circles: Perform forward and backward arm circles for 1 minute to loosen up your shoulders.
Dynamic Stretches: Do jumping jacks, lunges, and arm swings for 2 minutes to prepare your body for badminton movements.
Grip Practice: Hold a badminton racket with a forehand grip and practice swinging your arm back and forth to get used to the feel.

Activity Description (15 minutes):

Grip and Stance:  Start by holding the racket with a forehand grip (dominant hand on top). Stand sideways to the net with your non-dominant foot slightly forward for stability.

Forehand Swing:  Hold the shuttlecock in your non-dominant hand at waist height in front of your body. With your dominant hand, swing the racket back over your head in a circular motion, keeping your elbow high.

Hitting Power: As you swing your racket forward, hit the shuttlecock with the racket face slightly upwards at a point above your head. Imagine pushing the shuttlecock high and deep toward the back of the court.

Follow Through:  After hitting the shuttlecock, continue the swing of your racket forward with a full arm extension, ending with the racket pointing upwards in front of you.

Partner Practice: Divide players into pairs. One player feeds the shuttlecock underhand to their partner who practices hitting clear shots. Players should switch roles after a few attempts.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Gentle Stretches: Perform static stretches focusing on your shoulders, arms, legs, and back.
Slow Walk: Walk slowly around the court for 2 minutes to cool down.

Variations

Stationary vs. Moving: Start with players practicing clear shots from a stationary position. Once comfortable, introduce feeding the shuttlecock from different locations on the court, requiring players to move and adjust their footwork.

Target Practice: Mark a zone on the back of the court with cones. Players aim their clear shots to land within the zone.

Clear vs. Drop Shot: Once players can hit clear shots consistently, introduce practicing drop shots (hitting the shuttlecock softly just over the net) to develop shot variation.

Coaching Tips

Focus on Technique: Emphasize keeping the racket face slightly upwards at impact to send the shuttlecock high.
Follow Through is Key: Remind players to complete the full swing for maximum power and control.
Body Movement: Encourage players to use their legs for power by slightly jumping as they hit the shuttlecock.
Accuracy over Power: Initially, focus on hitting the clear shot consistently to the back of the court rather than hitting it too hard.

Equipment/Material Required

Badminton rackets (one per player)
Shuttlecocks (minimum 6)
Cones (optional, for target practice variation)
